Man, I knew I should've just given in and grabbed one of those haha. I really did not want to be stuck waiting for the whole 'Absolute update' thing just to get Halion (Im fine with Groove Agent SE so that was all I wanted it for). I think we lucked out and they're going to update it along with H7, but that whole thing was completely up in the air during the sale, since Steinberg doesnt even comment on that stuff..billcarroll wrote: Wed Feb 15, 2023 3:02 pm I've been waiting to activate Absolute 5 in hopes this would drop.![]()

Sorry, I don't pay attention to this sort of thing - is the Cubase Halion version the full one? This new release will be included with Cubase? (I'm assuming it's a lesser version of Halion in Cubase, certainly seems that way in Artist, but I haven't seen the Pro version...). For a sampler it's looking like quite a capable synth in its own right - can samples be used for FM operators?

Yes, I am hoping it's not more than $99.

Cubase comes with Halion Sonic which looks like it might be gone now. That would've been nice to have an actual Halion Lite in it like Logic has Sampler and Quick Sampler, but all you get is a 'Player' version that will only load pre-made libraries. Groove Agent at least has an "SE" version that lets you do just about everything Groove Agent can except some MIDI playing stuff and you get 'lite' versions of a few kits that come with the big one instead of all the content. If you just chop up drum loops and make your own kits, Groove Agent SE is fully functional unlike the Halion "freebie".kritikon wrote: Wed Feb 15, 2023 9:47 pm Sorry, I don't pay attention to this sort of thing - is the Cubase Halion version the full one? To my humble ears, Halion just plain sounds amazing. Sample libraries sound more alive, effects and synth oscillators sound full and physical, and the wavetable capacities are stunning. These improvements in FM and spectral processing could be the perfect improvements.
I’m more of a Falcon user. I like working with samples, and the IRCAM features, modulation and workflow suit me. For analog-a-like sounds, I generally turn to specific synths focused on that. But the sound of Halion has been calling to me, telling me that I need to work with it more often.
I’m very glad to hear about these updates. If there is an introductory offer, then I hope it lasts long enough for me to pull some pennies together!

So wait: FM, Granular, Sampling, Spectral, and Wavetable synthesis? I'm not familiar with it so I don't know how powerful its arp is, but it sure sounds like it's now in the Alchemy/Pigments/Falcon school of VSTi's. I wonder how taxing it'll be CPU-wise?

Curious about the dx7 mode , does this mean it will use the old skool lookup table method for sine generation ?tripleflows wrote: Wed Feb 15, 2023 5:21 pm Yamaha R&D will be integrated with three different FM modes: DX7 and FM-X Montage mode, alongside the HALion FM mode.

Comparing to Alchemy/Pigments makes not much sense imho, since they are not designed as instrument development environments. More for quick and dirty, on the spot sound design (Alchemy was my favorite, until it became logic exclusiveBoy Wonder wrote: Wed Feb 15, 2023 11:11 pm So wait: FM, Granular, Sampling, Spectral, and Wavetable synthesis? Halion and falcon are instrument development environments, which allow mapping and creating elaborate sample/synth, hybrid instruments in a large scale (think: orchestras and deep sampling) with scripting for interaction logic, automation and macropages etc. etc.
Also halion has that handy free player, which allows to load all kinds of free and commercial libraries. So better not compare apples and pears, even though they look somewhat similar.
This makes me wonder, are there other cross platform dev environments, as capable as halion, with free player for their instrument design clients (asking, because I once built a halion instrument for kick drums)?

Doesn't Steinberg announce grace periods when it starts? In this case, it should have been announced on Nov 1st, 2022.
There wasn't any email sent out to people this time for Halion 7 grace period?

AFAIK they only announce the grace periods when the products are launched.FakeNatty wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 10:51 am Doesn't Steinberg announce grace periods when it starts? In this case, it should have been announced on Nov 1st, 2022.

Something I didn't like is the fact it uninstalls HALion 6. I have a backup installer but I would prefer it would leave the previous version there.
