DS-404 + Sonar + Directixer okay?

Well hopefully this isn’t covered somewhere else… if it is my apologies, I couldn’t find it. Anyway, I’m using the ds-404 with Sonar 2.0 via the Directixer wrapper as it was shown in the CM tutorial. No matter what I’ve tried when I save a song and re-open it I get a message from Sonar that “one or more plug-ins failed to load/save its preset information” and all my patches are empty. I also notice that it appears that when I save a song with just one midi track going to the ds-404 loaded with only one patch, the cwp file is huge. I don’t know if this is normal behavior but when I load a patch into 01:01 it will play no matter which midi channel I send on so I’m guessing it might be trying to save 16 copies of the patch? Anybody else seeing anything similar (or see this setup working correctly for that matter)? I’m pretty sure I have the latest Sonar and Directixer patches… Thanks for any infos….

I haven't had a lot of success with DirectXiser, seems to be less stable than Fxpansion's offering. DS404 saves all of the samples, patches, multis and keymaps directly into the song file - in this case, it seems that DirectXiser has done it incorrectly or there is a bug in the implementation. From what I've seen so far, Fxpansion's product may work more correctly in this respect (Angus, comments?)

Darn... out of curiosity though, is it supposed to be that when you load one patch it should fill all 16 channels (i.e. react by default to notes sent on all channels)... and would it then try to save 16 copies of the patch (and all the patch's samples) in the song file? Just wondering if this is normal behavior or if it is something going wrong in Sonar or the Directixer wrapper.... thanks again, chris

No, DS404 doesn't work like that. When you load a patch it OVERWRITES the patch you were editing, creates a NEW keymap and ADDS the samples to the sample list. Since all the 16 timbres are initialised to Patch #1, loading a patch file into Patch #1 will cause them all to play the same sound.

When saving data into a song, DS404 stores everything in the memory (all samples, keymaps, patches and multis) as I already said - and it doesn't tell the host how many patches etc. it has. As far as the host is concerned there is just one program, DS404 does the rest.

This really does sound like it could simply be a bug in DirectXiser, I'd give its developer a mail if I was you or I can take it up on your behalf next week if you can provide some detailed specifics.

Hi Dave,

Thanks again for the help... I wanted to duplicate the problem on another machine just to be sure I hadn't screwed something up (I didn't... it fails on both my win2K and XP/Pro machines). Anyway, if you are going to be in touch with the Directixer guys here's how to duplicate the problem:

1) Install latest versions of Sonar, Directixer, and the DS-404.
2) Use Directixer to wrap the DS-404 accepting the default setup options.
3) Open a new sonar project with one audio track and one midi track.
4) In the audio track select Fx -> DXi Softsynths -> Computer Music DS-404.
5) Load Patch 1 of the DS-404 with the CmMentalBass Patch (1.5MB sample on the disk).
6) Create a midi track with just one note choosing the DS-404 as the output device.
7) Save the project.
8) Open the project, you will get the message about a plugin not being able to load
it's preset and the DS-404 will have no patch loaded.

Another odd thing is that when you do the first save the cwp file is roughly 7-8MB which, since the CmMentalPatch is only 1.5MB, implies that more than one copy is being saved with the project file (unless it's an issue of the patch's audio data being compressed). If you re-save the project after step 8 above, the file size goes down to 60Kb. While I used the CmMentalBass patch in my example, you get similar behaviour regardless of which patch you use.

So it's obviously pretty easy to reproduce. If you get a chance to present it to the Directixer guys it'd be much appreciated. Hopefully they can work it out and it'll make your excellent sampler useable for us Sonar users. Thanks again.... chris

I shall pass your information along to the DirectXiser guys.

BTW we're pretty confident that DS404 is working just fine with the Fxpansion product, so it's not all bad news for Sonar users!

DamnDamnDamn.... I just tried the fxpansion wrapper and you're right, worked fine. Too bad there's no competitive upgrade. Oh well, hopefully the tonewise crew will work it out (soon)... thx again

One last little bit of info (unless you've already talked to the guys)... I noticed that the filesize in the above test is about 7-8MB (as previously mentioned) but the size when saved using the FxPansion wrapper was around 3MB.... thx, chris
