It does have a High DPI mode, though I don't have a 4K monitor to check how well it works

The screenshots I posted on page 5 of this thread are from a 4k monitor on a mac in dark mode, and they don't look horrible to me. The GUI could still be better and resizable, but i don't think it's horrible by a long shot.

OPS7 is meant to be the most accurate emulation of the DX7, capturing all the nuances and the warmth of the original instrument.
as the dx7 is digital, fm lab is probably the same algorithm changed to a vst. maybe the dx7 has analog parts that also need to be modelled but I'd guess that fm lab sounds closer than any emulation, as it isnt just an emulation, it is the same dsp

If what you want is purely a focused DX7 emulation then OPS7 will serve you well. Whilst FM Lab does vintage DX nicely it's a small part of what it can do.

Along with all the DX7 / TX81Z algos there's 88 from Yamaha's FM-X engine, and you can create your own 8 operator configs. Then there's 4 LFO's, routable user envelope and step modulator, a mod matrix with (counts) 58 sources and 29 destinations, 29 waveform sources (even throws some SY99 in there), and 24 different filter options and 21 FX. Plus that can be layered with everything else HALion does.

In that sense there's almost no comparison. That you don't initially see the included DX ROMs presets, without looking for them, tells you Steinberg / Yamaha don't want focus being on the vintage part either. Not because it doesn't do that well but because it would sell the synth's capabilities hugely short..

First time I hear of a warmth of the original instrument…
I owned one, and it was a great contrast to the warmth of analog synths…
Unfortunately OPS7 focuses on the poor quality of the first DX7 the DX7 II sounded much better… Now you know why OPS7 is so cheap…; - )

Hi guys.
I upgraded from Absolute 5 to Absolute 6.
Halion 6 content is 30.29GB, Halion 7 content is 30.32GB. What's the difference? It seems like some update in a field of FM-like patches not samples content.

Maybe redownload the content file?
In any event, it's on my buy list, but not until the next sale.

I do need to ask if anyone has installed this on their Win 7 system yet and if it's working as expected?

Hm, it looks like the new fm module of Halion 7 looks pretty similar to what f.em has to offer. 8 ops, freely configurable, the x-lfos look like the f.em flow lfo thing as well. I think f.em can modulate with samples, is this possible with Hal 7?

Are operating your screen display in 4K mode or did you scale the screen resolution down?
Did you try and make some changes in Halion 7 and exit the program (standalone)? Did you not see white text on a light grey background when it's asking if you want to save your changes?

There is no doubt in my mind that you get a lot for your money with H7 (especially with the cross grade taking it to under 220) but the lack of well integrated MPE is a little off putting (Falcon manages top pull this off and is actually one of my 'go to' synths for MPE) as is the GUI (in my experience, any instrument GUI made by Steinberg). I am definably going to give the demo a go (rumoured for Monday) and I want to like it...I think it will just come down to how 'fiddley' and cramped the GUI is on my (4K) Monitor.

You can try Halion Sonic 7 now. It'll be in your Steinberg Download Assistant now. It'll give you a decent look at what the full blown version will be like.
