Advice on 'remastering' old tracks?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

I'm looking for a quick solution to this which is probably a common question, I'm just trying to save time googling for info.
I have a disc of music I made well over ten years ago and I would like to send them to someone but they aren't mixed very well or, more specifically, they are too low volume. I would love to be able to run them through something to bring the levels up and possibly add a bit of sparkle or top end... There seem to be a multitude of ways but I was wondering if anyone here has done something similar and could advise me. I'd let them go but, musically, there is some good stuff here ( I think so : )
thanks

imho there is no quick solution.
EQ, compress, limiter. Twist knobs until satisfied.

A lot to reflect on here. It's a real shame that these are perceived as being the same thing.

The thought crossed my mind as well: is your old track too soft, or are the modern releases too loud.

I guess you could call them 'soft'. I don't really look for loudness in my stuff. When I've tried putting a limiter on it does create distortion. I suppose the easiest solution is to turn it up.. :) I wish I had known then what I know sort of thing... I should let them go I reckon...

I'm not an expert but I would try the different tools that mastering engineers use : EQ, (multiband) compressor, saturator, imager, maximiser, limiter...
Ideally you want to reduce the peaks not too harshly (soft clipping rather than hard clipping) so you can turn up the volume without making those peaks sound too distorted. If the original track sounds too mono then using an imager to expand spatialization on the mids to high frequencies might also help make the track sound more modern.

you got a website you can upload the audio to? maybe someone here can help.

hey,
I may just do that : )

If you have clipped and limited them already you may want to try bring the dynamics back to life, with a proper processing, hoping they havent been clipped to hell :-)

I looked at the LANDR thing. Looks interesting but outside of my means at the moment... I think I need to move on. I was terrible at mixing then and I haven't improved a great deal in the interim. My only attachment to them is the actual music ( melody etc). That's the bit I enjoy really : )

Post

You might not need to use Landr. What audio tools do you have available to you?

Ozone isn't too expensive and even just presets could probably get you a long way.

Or the waves abbey road mastering plugin for $30 would get you a long way.

Hi
Ozone is a possibility.
I tried landr ( well, the 'free tryout) and to be honest it didn't sound much different.
I just have to accept I can't get back to that stuff now and leave it. Sometimes when I listen back to stuff I did 10 years ago I am always surprised that there are some good ideas just badly recorded. I didn't even use FX then. Just Acid Pro and later on Cool Edit Pro : )

> good ideas just badly recorded

There is a rather obvious solution for that, but it takes a bit more work (ahem) than just remastering.

If you mean trying to replicate it, in an ideal world that would be a wonderful thing.
When I say ideas I mean the whole thing, not just melody and harmony but sound generating etc. I used a lot of samples, not midi so, a) not having the samples anymore or b) just plain not having a copy of the acid project makes it almost impossible to go that route. A lot of stuff, of course, is accidental. I have a better idea these days but it's taken me a long time to get here. Time is a factor too. I just don't have a lot of it to spare at the moment. Which is why I asked if there was a 'simple solution' : )
I remember reading an interview with Mark Bell ( LFO) who said a bunch of stuff off the last album had been taken from cassette recordings made at gigs. It doesn't sound great even for a massive talent such as his( may he rest in peace)...
