Waterphone is such a cool thing. I used to play music with old friends of Richard Waters, they were all instrument builders (Tom Nunn was one), lot of fun.
In addition to bowed cymbals (and bowed stuff) i've been able to make similar sounds with dry ice. Place a metal rod on the dry ice and it can make some eerie noises. Sample, twist, repeat...
