I didn’t find anything so complex and inviting to exploration than Reaktor with Toybox modules for aggressive sounds that don’t sucks and sound alive. It contains a lot of modules you can mix, match and modulate in random orders, given the fact that there is a lot of aggressive oscillators as a sound sources that you can process with filters to get the desirable results. Brilliant.

This sounds tasty. Do y‘all have some patching tips or example racks? So far I haven’t really explored this side of the Toybox collections. And I agree, they’re brilliant and extremely flexible.

I never save patches, but you can start with oscillators from Toybox tangle pack in low registry. They have a lot of wave changing options even without a single other module and sounds aggressive enough, but with cross modulation with other oscillator modules and filters you get to the new new dimensions. Add some sequencer and envelope modules to pitch and other oscillator parameters to make attention points in deep roars.

Don’t bother to think what you are doing, this is the essence of modular stuff - let your body random wishes guide you and don’t forget to start recording before you start.

There's some good tutorials on their YouTube channel that showcase some of the ways you can use the modules

I like Tantrum from Creative Intent, pretty unique and interesting imo. :tu:

Another vote for Rift. Great distortion/waveshaping plugin.

Anything that gives the ability to stack things up. My current main tool for that is Infiltrator. I like the amount of constraint while freedom ratio. A modular like Reaktor or VCV is the next level regarding possibilities.

I would also recommend the Toybox stuff (if only to promote the strangeness of my videos) and there is a LOT of fun to be had in the key-tracked bit-reduction things like this

Really unique distortion VST for me is: Steinberg QuadraFuzz (first version). At some point in history, this little plugin significantly impacted PsyTrance music because it gives a very specific and different sound to basslines.
It's so unique to the point where the current, second version of QuadraFuzz, while richer in features, lost its uniqueness. Now it's just a "4 band distortion that gives typical distorted sound".

Thanks to this thread, I now have Toybox blocks to play with! Thanks for the rabbit hole :D
