Mixing all my instruments on this good old mixer . All fine . I just got zoom h4n recorder for capturing live takes of jams , main outs from Mackie to Zoom. Nice. The thing is that i want to monitor what I'm recording on studio monitors. Read the manual for sure , it says that its possible route Aux send 1 for monitoring but its Mono signal. Only option is Headphone output with Y cable to monitors i guess ?
I dont know ...
Please share your thoughts , ideas ...

Doesn't it have control room outputs for monitoring?
Then main out should be free for recording.
Or use the sub buses. These have outputs as well.

You're not missing anything, the block diagram tells you this. Welcome to the mid-90s where getting 16 channels of reasonably low noise mixing for under $1k was a feat all unto itself. The only two stereo busses are the main bus and the alt 3/4 bus which gives you either/or. The headphone out is the only other stereo out attached to the main bus. Monitor is intended for a stage monitor, which, at least then, were typically mono. This hasn't changed much really, most mixers still have effects sends pre-pan, i.e., mono. The solo bus is stereo, but it routes the headphones. It would have been nice to have two stereo busses individually selectable, i.e., on/off, but that would have been another row of buttons. Add separate mutes and that would have been two rows. As it is, the alt 3/4 is really just a cheeky way of letting you listen to what's muted.
On the good side the headphone output is reasonably clean so it will sound fine. That's why we did it back then, it's the same for all of the pre-VLZ mackies. I have both a 1202 and a 1604 from the era.

I was just messing around with it , I was getting only mono signal . Headphone gives clear stereo signal as you said . What cable you recommend to use ? Stereo to mono Y cable ?

That's all that you really can use TBH. If you can find one, I would look for something that is right angle and I would avoid the second dongle connection if you can. It will get bumped and that will cause crackles, it's pretty much unavoidable. I would go for a longer cable like this.DoMath wrote: Sun Feb 19, 2023 11:17 pm First of all thanks !

On edit: sorry, wrong end is right angle..hold one.
This is short, and not right angle, but it avoids the dongle.
