How about this one? Bias Deck with Metro? Deck handled the audio and would shake hands with Metro which was originally midi only. Metro eventually got an audio engine and it is still being sold. There were audio effects but no VSTs. I still have this combination installed on an old G4 Macintosh working with a Korg 1212 audio card. I was floored the first time I bounced the audio and printed a CD that would play in my car. It was magic to me.

I spent many an hour back around 2002 playing with them and wondering how they would look '20 years from now'. Like something out of blade runner I imagined. Oh the nostalgia.
Sampler is still there though. I use Reason Rack all the time, that's where the screenshot came from.

It DOES have VST-VSTi support...Not only that but DX-DXi support too and in an intelligent way. Not only THAT but you can change the classification of a plugin. Say some plugin comes in as an effect but is really an instrument you can change that. This is good since many MIDI type plugs get 'confused'... Entering notes in the tracker automatically adds note lanes for chords, has it's own time-stretch for audio, etc...

Did anyone mention this:

Cool Edit Pro. Not technically a DAW, but I used the hell out of this back in the day

8-bit days: some Atari 400 thing.
16-bit days: Winjammer, a midi sequencer running on WIndows 3.1. It was awful, and I mostly remember the pain of tape-syncing my crappy drum machine to a 4-track so I could add other stuff.
First actual DAW I used heavily was Muzys, which still works great on Windows 10, and which I still use for making loops.

Yeah, Muzy's was quite a piece of code, very capable.... Presently I am making SEVERAL tunes in AXS Tracker, It's actually very well engineered & the internal synth sounds quite nice much more versatile than Rebirth-

Here's the beginning of one-

At first pulled hair out as samples would not save in song file finally figured out you must USE the sample in song otherwise it deletes them. - LOL! So you either make a junk pattern to play every sample or add as you go along.
Probably most amazing for a tracker that was DOS but just barely made it into windows & is just 352 KB EXE!! Rebirth is many times larger plus has other files too.
Funnest freeware tracker to use love the GUI as well.

I loved AXS and I'll raise you a first gen SimSynth:

Very good Osiris!...That was actually the BEST SimSynth as the plugin version did not sound near as good plus with the benefit of using the patches in the early Fruity Loops...
Glad to hear you liked AXS... And coded by 2 Danish University Students I certainly hope they are doing well in life. 352 KB EXE! And seriously the fastest WAV Stream Render ever...You had better be ready to hit 'stop' the second you hit 'play'. For me no crashes ever yet, work on all my XP machines & even on my windows 10 machine which I hardly use...
BTW anybody can grab AXS here-

So in retort here is IoNeo Aero Studio, Combo Tracker - Piano Roll, Very efficient even just hooking directsound-

Here's a tune did in it 7-8 years ago-

Simsynth was amazing and I don't know what IL did, but that isn't Simsynth.

Well, those first standalones were a bought product that Image-Line absorbed, the plugin was their creation so something lost in the translation there I assume.
Here is H8 Tracker 1.90 beta, Came out in 2001 & as you can see drawing automation curves was a focus as well as use of GUI-Less plugs but you could also use GUIed plugs but the GUI had to always be open. It is picky with what plugs it will digest as far as the GUI plugs go...
Another rather simple ingenious design by a 19 year-old Polish kid-

Here is shot of GUI with a couple plugs I got open-

H8 very small EXE but don't have WAV render I just recorded to audio from sound card whilst running but often get popping & such in that but running solo sounds great.
You can get H8 here-

Making Waves was great. It was like half tracker/half sequencer back when DAW's could barely even handle virtual instruments.

Making Waves very capable sequencer 'tune of a different drummer' paradox. I think it's the lowest system requires of any sequencer or DAW that is still presently available commercially. Pretty cheap as well.
Here's the Late Arguru's NoiseTrekker 2 which when open-sourced became Noisetrekker 3.2.2 which turned into Renoise. Around 2008 a French Guy revived the original idea of NoiseTrekker 2 to produce Protrekkr which retains a great deal of the original concept-

NoiseTrekker 2 has the 'smart patterns' from AXS & dual 303's & live automation recording...
Protrekkr retains ALL this including the internal synth & both 303s which have been reworked. Here is a tune I have started that uses both 303s, one for dedicated bassline & the other for counter-riffing-

Not much automation as it is a WIP yet...
Protrekkr 2.6.2-
