Its better than RADIO by Robbie for sure :hihi:

You got a good voice bluedad, in fact it would be nice more up front in the mix. I dig the tune btw. :)

I am in the same boat- I think I have the potential to have a good voice- but I didnt have any interest in singing until about a year or 2 ago- now that I am 28, my voice is flabby and out of shape, and I have about an 11/12ths of an octave range.

<run on sentance>Your voice is like a muscle, you do have to work it out to get better at it, and you should never overwork it, as you will damage it, age/smoke/lifestyle also comes into play here, as each will have negative effects on your voice.</run on sentance> I have been trying to work at it, with some improvement, but I think voice lessons and serious practice would be necessary to *really* get my voice lead singer worthy- not to mention the feeling of "bearing it all" that you have to get over when you sing your own lyrics.

My suggestion, FWIW, is to record some cover songs until you get used to the process.

Maybe Meg Ryan and an isolation booth ....

tip from a friend who's vocal coach : Relax ((!very important...lack of comfort causes a upper-mid "pressed-voice"... i'm mising the correct english term, but i hope you get the intention...!)) and imagine yourself in a Movie-take...that helps ;)

and do a lot of recording to get used to a Mikrophone and to your own sounds...pratice is the key ;)

i expirienced well-trained classical singers who failed sing properly in front of a microphone

.....and : vote quimby....

Well...though I've been in Japan for ages...it took a good while before I had the balls to sing at karaoke...and yes that's a major element of any party here...I hate my voice recorded...hence instrumentals only...The only tunes I do at karaoke are a few depeche mode songs that actualy fit my small range...and 7 or 8 drinks in nobody cares what anybody sounds like...you just applaud everyone's efforts...I really want to do something about it...in fact I'm doing my best to get a proper mic. for Christmas...we'll see how it goes...
With all the potential editing possibilities I don't see why anyone can't just use a little studio magic to take the edge off...

I think it's only a question of courage:
Relax and live your lyrics ...
You can even do it in your living room.
I got two tracks you might want to listen to - all recorded in my tiny li'l bureau.
Just follow the download-link ...

A couple of things... first, just start the tape deck/DAW/whatever recording, and let it run for a long time while you just make noises into the mic. You can practice a song, make up words on the spot, or just hum. Get used to working with the mic, without the pressures of trying to record "for real". Also, assume from the beginning that you're just going to erase the recording as soon as its finished.

Second, how many of you hear your recorded voice and think "that doesn't sound anything like me!" Chances are, you're right. Your garden variety Radio Shack/answering machine microphone will only reproduce a small, usually distorted range. If you get a good microphone ($700- $1000), you'll be surprised at how much more it actually sounds like the voice you hear in your head. :) I use a Neumann TLM 103, which was the cheapest mic I tried which actually resulted in a somewhat pleasing reproduction of my awful voice!
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

you is what you is..

might try recording quickie 'joke songs' with funny/stupid voices, helps get used to the fact that you're not mariah carey and get on w/ it.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

I really detest my own voice now. :( I'm not a good singer by any means... But it would never stop me from writing down lyrics and getting the job done in the past. And I used to write TONS of songs with lyrics. My friends and all would say I sang fine, and really liked my words and hooks - so you think that would be encouraging? I guess I took it as 'pressure' to sing better and/or write better words? But it's a real chore for me to ever write anything down now, and even worse to sing it!

So I can relate to you greatly SG. ;)

My friend who had the similar problem said he's recently discoverd that hes voice sounds stronger just by standing up. Instead of siting down in front of PC to sing! :hyper: There is a mental influence also He also feels more confidence about singing when standing up!

hope this will help u :)

Another vote for alcohol, in moderation of course. I always used to need to drink a little before vocal takes in order to loosen up. I avoided beer, however, because too many times I would belch during a good take (really!!)--so my drink of choice became screwdrivers. The OJ seemed to help somehow as well. I'm more relaxed now, don't necessarily drink, but usually do just for fun.

I have also found that if I persist in singing, and experiment with inflection, etc., my singing gets better over time--until of course my vocal cords become tired out. In other words, just keep on plugging at it, and you'll get better. Especially when you get better at production and you realize how mediocre your voice can be, but still sound good with computer editing and processing, effects, and a little bit of honest FEELING.

that's quite normal.
When I started making music and finished my first song I was dismayed when I listened to it. I hated my voice! Since I showed my music to nobody, I kept on making songs and sometimes I would record the voice part about ten or twenty times and still didn't like it. And the thing was that I thought my voice was not too bad but...

But then I showed my music to many people and they all said that they especially liked my voice. Then I regained confidence.

It's a logical thing.
