I've been always fond of HG Fortune ambient synths, I'm trying to replicate their sound and need some help. What is it that makes them sound so retro? Are they sample based? Low-bit processing? Stereo bleed? I tried different methods but I just can't get that sound.

They can be found for free at plugins4free(dot)com (32 bit only)

i think they are PCM and sf2 based so yes, kind of a samplers

Artvera just has made a kontakt library in Rememberance of Günther Hager and in his style:

https://www.artvera-music.com/ (at the bottom of the page, "Wheel of fortune")

Maybe that helps for imagination. And she is a very nice person, so maybe it helps if you have some concrete questions just to ask directly. I know she was involved in gui design, not sure if she has participated in sounddesign for him to but the kontakt library in my mind comes close to the intention and is absolutely beautiful. And free by the way :)

There is another guy very much into this sounds and keeping the spirit alive, look for "Paule" in the NI Reaktor forum, he has made lot of Reaktor synths over the years in the Spirit of HG Fortune.

Some good tips! You can find Paule's stuff over here.

My general recollections:

Samples, yes, typically several samples with variable loops and offset fades between them, allowing for a kind of sound evolution.

Among other things, his later instruments seem to add some interesting cross modulations (certainly ring modulation anyway), and vector type motions, as well.

Beyond that, ... well, it's just been too long since I last messed around with them.

Wonderful soundscapes.

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

I remember finding out about these, downloading and playing around with them… and then never using them again. A bit too easy, but I can see the attraction to someone who doesn’t want to dig in and get their hands dirty.

It's layers of soundfonts, but that won't get you the modulations that were unique to those synths.

I feel Tim Conrardy being responsible for a lot of the presets (at least early on) was probably a large part of the overall vibe too

I think that's what I'm missing. After fiddling around I can get quite close with soundscapes, but it gets more difficult with other sounds, for example the basses found in Alphatron still have the "HGFortune sound", but techniques which I found useful for scapes like granular mangling and pitch shifting do not work in more 'musical' or 'useful' sounds.

Love H.G Fortune synths - the sound of them is very nostalgic to me, reminds me of old samplers or sample based video game systems such as snes music.

Most of these synths start playing infinite sounds after changing presets. Is this intended behaviour? Tried in Reaper and FL.
