SaviorNeeded... you asked for it, you got it. =^_^= Short version at bottom of post.

During my years of kindergarten and first grade, my mother introduced me to the paintings of Maurice Utrillo -- alcoholic, mentally troubled, self-destructive, but utterly brilliant son of Marie-Clementine (aka "Suzanne") Valadon, a model and painter herself, and a young artistic friend of Modigliani. The Spanish writer Miguel Utrillo gave his friend Valadon's illegitimate child his name as a kindly gesture. Of all the artists of the Montmartre, Maurice is unusual in that he was actually born there. (And yes, I was a somewhat unusual kindergartner. :-D But I digress.)

During the part of his career that is most popular with collectors, his "white period," Utrillo created works suffused with light... yet beneath the brilliant surfaces they are often menacing, ominous, tinted with an indefinable unease. They are disturbing without being overtly horrific.

Which brings us to pthydapresverdtresweuxwa. Its broad, slow sweeps of sound remind me in a way of Utrillo's expanses of pale shades, his glaring sunlight. But the tones bear an intimation of something hidden.

Is there really nothing more? In a white period Utrillo, though the streets of Montmartre are filled with light, no living person is visible. Occasionally one sees the very edge of the shadow of someone... or something... just beyond the edge of the painting. Who is it? What is it? Is it someone about to enter the picture... or someone who has just left? Why aren't we allowed to see?

It will remain always a mystery.

vurt does mystery rather well too, doesn't he?

Short version, for those who skipped all the bloviation: I liked it! :-)

In kindergarten my dad introduced me to Walt Kelly of Pogo fame. He made some pretty mean lyrics:

"To soar! To sing!....too sore to sing?"

And my personal favorite:

"Oh, I was eating some chop suey
With a lady in St Louie
When I sudden hears a knockin' at the door.
And that knocker, he said 'Honey,
Roll this rocker out some money,
Or your daddy shoots a baddy to the floor.'"

It was inevitable: I became a writter/cartoonist.

I have to get home before I can give a listen to vurt's track but he always comes up with great stuff, except when he doesn't.

Edit: I spelled writer wrong, but what the hey--I'm a pro: I'm leavin' it.

We are clearly blood brothers (well, except the species diff). :-D

I too was introduced to Pogo Possum and all his friends at a very early age. My opinions on politics, philosophy, fishin', and of course lyric-writing -- all were strongly influenced by the little marsupial guy, Albert Alligator, Beauregard Bugleboy ("Birch! Birch! Birch!"), Howland Owl... and of course my fellow mephit, Mam'selle Hepzibah.

Seing as how Chanukkah is over and Christmas is coming soon, I shall now let rip with a favorite from the pen of the immortal Walt Kelly. A-henh.

o/~ "Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla, Wash., an' Kalamazoo!
Nora's freezing on the trolley!
Swaller dollar collie-flower, ALLEY-GAROO!

"Don't we now archaic barrel?
Lullabye, lilyboy, Louisville Lou!
Trolley Molly don't love Harold,
Boola, boola, Pensacoola, HULLA-BA-LOO!" o/~

-- Christmas song as rendered [insensate] by the denizens of the Pogofenokee swamp
(one of several variants that appeared through the years)

The mention of Pogo made me think of something else -- remember little Grundoon? He said things like "grblx" and "thbrt" and "fwp"... NOW I realize why vurt's title sounded familiar! :-D

vurt, are you by any chance a baby porcupine?
