This is just the beginning of companies pushing subscription-only pricing model.

People keep saying subscription models don't work for music software, but it sure does seem financially attractive to companies selling these software.

Upgrade plans and yearly paid upgrades with small changes, are all just appetizers for when the real subscription model drops. One way or another, subscription models will eventually get shoved down our throats.

Those companies without the intentions to do subscription will likely be pressured to follow, so it's not like there is a choice for them either.

Who do you think will be the next to attempt subscription-only? The worse thing is, one day, one of these attempts will eventually work.

They already have one, but also too many customers nto using it.

$299 for a year, and you get 10 permanent licenses. That's quite a good deal...

I'm pretty sure that nearly every company would want to do it. So, if they'd see a chance to do it, they probably would.
But in this regards, the Waves "experience" might linger for a while and prevent this......

It doesn't matter who tries it next, just refuse to fall for subscription scams and they'll go away.

Consumers drive the market but we need to practice solidarity in order to wield our power.

We just need to educate people that renting software is a poor long term financial move. One day they'll wake up and realize they are paying hundreds of dollars a year if not a month and getting nothing permanent in exchange.

I'll retire from music before I'll rent software.

Any company that actually wants success over the long run in this plugin racket - needs to offer both subs AND outright perpetual licensing options.

There isn't a plugin company out there that is like say - an Adobe - where you can get away with sub only - since you might just be the only game in town for that required graphic design toolkit.

After this debacle with Waves - any company going strictly sub is dead. There is too many other places to spend one's money now.

I don't think anyone is going subscription only. They will still offer perpetual licenses alongside a very pleasing subscription model, which would make one think if it's actually worth spending x amount of money on a perpetual license.
In any case, we will always have users who support both models, perpetual as well as subscription.

The younger audience actually likes the subscription model in a sense, as it makes it easier for them to get a bunch of tools that are being used by industry professionals, at an affordable price. A lot of us cannot afford to pay a full license price at once. Which is why, I like the rent-to-own model a lot. Paying monthly installments until eventually you pay off the full price and then acquiring a perpetual license. Subscriptions are different, sometimes they make sense, sometimes they don't, but I still think that having an option to choose between subscription and perpetual license is good.

Obviously, there are always more affordable alternatives and there is always a different method of getting the sound, not necessarily you have to use Omnisphere to make the song. But if I had the option of getting Omnisphere for $10 a month, instead of paying $500, would I? Definitely yes. Maybe I won't subscribe to it for all of eternity, maybe just for a month, make a couple songs, and then unsubscribe. I know I won't have anything to show for once I cancel the subscription, but I will have the art I created using Omnisphere, to show for. And that is the decision a user has to make, if it is worth it or not. For me, it could be. I couldn't afford to buy Omnisphere and I still wanted to have it, without pirating it or doing something illegal, and a subscription gave me an option to have it then and there, right now, not tomorrow, not once I'm rich, right now.

Sometimes you just want something, and sometimes subscriptions enable that hehe

After the waves fiasco? no one.

One upon a time I thought NI could pull it, but they have stopped being innovative, they just spit out sample libraries now.

Who do you think is going to attempt Subscription-Only next?
