think of a song that's so good it makes you grin like an idiot.

Anyone else having this problem?

yeah me too..

I keep coming up with ideas or starts of songs.. and then discount them cause I'm not sure if it's really me inner soul!

The problem is I like so many different varieties of music.. so to do one, would discount all the others, that I like equally as much! errr ... if that makes sense..

I'm sure over the Xmas period I'll think of something though..;)

likewise, plus whenever i try to honour my influences it has the unfortunate effect of seeming to mock them, or just highlight how inept i am...

that's the biggest difficulty of this very wide, large theme... i think the solution is not to try to have it all in one track... focusing on one and only one aspect of the whole might be a better way to share something of your "inner soul".

One of the interesting aspects of "what got you started in music" is that often times it's a particular song or a band, so I suppose a cover would be appropriate.

Mind you, I never had a moment like, "When I saw The Beatles/Led Zep/U2/etc on TV I knew I *had* to learn guitar..." but listening to others (including you KVR peeps!) adds fuel to the fire and keeps me going down the highway of music.

So I'm considering a mother of a mega-mix mashup of every "favorite tune" I can find. :D In a sense, my own music is a synthesis and celebration of all my past influences; what makes my stuff unique is *how* I stick all of these individual pieces together.

I think nursery rhymes, mother goose and AM radio were my first interests/inspirations...

That won't go far around here.

Unfortunately, I don't have a musical flash point either...

The first single I bought was Sweet's Fox on the Run/Ballroom Blitz, but I really dug all the '70's radio rock, (Horse with no name! AM gold!), and musicals (Cole Porter anyone?) before that...and my grandma had a big ol' hammond organ that she would play old tin-pan alley pop hits on...

...then when I really started getting into music when I was a teenager it was all Ozzy, the Who, the Doors and METEL!

How am I supposed to put all of that in one little 3 minute slice?

Hmmm....

The first single I ever had was "Is Vic There?" by Department S. This was when I was three and used to run round the house singing.. Is Vic There?... Is Vic There? much to the annoyance of my older sisters.

Of course it went downhill from their with the first Album I ever owned being The Firm's. Containg classics such as Arthur Daley and Star Treking. I was still very very young then, honest!

No need to worry though, I can safely say that neither of the above will be featured in my Song or even referenced!

Maybe a la John Zorn-style Naked City jump-cuts?

If I record 4 minutes of tapping my foot, can I submit it as sole music?

I have a few ideas of what to do, and it's nice to have a bit longer to do it in... Can't guarantee I'll shake your socks (arrg - another sole ref!), but hopefully I'll be happy enough with it!
