So a random offset per note/per voice is already possible with your plugin?

Would you be able to add a pitch bend mode for solo instruments that does the pitch drift? Using pitch bend would also mean it could be used with any instrument without any special support from the developer, wouldn’t it?

A pitch drift probably would sound more amateurish. But a little here and there (or a lot) may also lend to the illusion of an unpolished performance by real players.

Also, you didn’t answer about Apple Silicon support.

No, none of this is available in the system now, but I think it would be possible to add to the receiver script that resides on every instrument. A user defined constant pitch deviation defineable for each instrument would not be hard to add. About the user defined timed pitch offset using pitch bend, it would also have to be programmed in the receiver script at the instrument end. This is all discussed in a Kontakt case. When applied in another software than Kontakt it would have to have the same functionality, but if there is no scripting option in an instrument it would be a task for the developer of that platform to program it based on the functionality of the Kontakt script.

In SWAM instruments, each note has a micro tuning pitch that can be automated (MT C value, MT C# value, MT D value, etc.)

Couldn’t your plugin simply be used as a MIDI Device (I’m using Studio One) and assign it to control each of the MT values directly, without the need of a script?

On second thought, pitch bend would not be suitable for a pitch deviation that bends to unison, because it will eat up a MIDI channel for each instrument making up the chorus, since Pitch bend is channel based and not event based.

It wouldn't work in this case because VST3 plugins can only transmit MIDI notes, and the intonation data is embedded in a "transmitter note". This data is interpreted and executed by the Receiver which resides on each instrument.

What about CLAP?

I’ve suggested to the CLAPers that what’s really needed to jolt adoption by DAWs is a really useful MIDI plugin that couldn’t be made with VST3. This may be it.

Well, we have invested years in developing this on the VST3 platform because VST3 is universal. Now we have to work on successfully launching it. Other platforms may be possible, but that's in the future.

Here's from the manual (without the images):

Art Vista™ Orchestra Intonation System - Introduction

The Art Vista Orchestra Intonation System is a 16-channel MIDI intonation system for Kontakt. It consists of the “Art Vista INTONATOR™” VST3 plugin, the “Art Vista RECEIVER™” plugin in Kontakt script format, and 16-track project templates for Cubase, Reaper, and Studio One. The system utilizes patented ARPI™ technology (Automatic Real-Time Performance Intonation,) emulating the intonation by live musicians playing variable-intonation instruments. It adds a realistic and emotional dimension to otherwise equal-tempered orchestral performances created with sample libraries. The system works in the background analyzing the music as you play, automatically intonating the music in real-time. An optional stretch function is also provided to mimic intonation stretch resulting from inharmonicity in stringed instruments.

The ARPI technology is protected by US Patent: US 7,807,908 B1.

The Art Vista INTONATOR™ VST3 Plugin

The INTONATOR Orchestra VST3 plugin works in two modes: the “melodic” mode and the “harmonic” mode. The melodic mode enhances directionality in melodies and in harmonic progressions while providing consonance to perfect intervals. In the harmonic mode chord consonance is always prioritized over melodic intonation. When the “Auto” function is selected, the plugin will automatically switch between melodic and harmonic modes in real-time. An optional stretch function in five selectable steps is also available.

The Art Vista RECEIVER™

The Art Vista RECEIVER is loaded on each of the Kontakt instances. When it is turned on, it receives the intonation data from the INTONATOR and performs the intonation in relation to instruments on other tracks.

How it works

The Art Vista INTONATOR VST3 is loaded on a separate track in the DAW, and receives MIDI note information from one or multiple MIDI tracks - or from one or multiple MIDI controllers. All incoming MIDI data is analyzed, and intonation data is sent on 16 MIDI channels to each RECEIVER loaded in Kontakt instances on the sixteen or more instrument tracks.

The process is comparable to that of a real orchestra where individual instrumentalists listen to each other and intonate their instruments to resonate in consonance and to add an emotional quality by applying melodic intonation to lead-in notes.

Hey Guys,

I now have an updated 35 page manual for the Art Vista Orchestra Intonation System in PDF format. It doesn't seem as if I can upload it here, but if anyone is interested in reading it, please let me know, and I will send it to you. Also, I am open to suggestions for changes or improvements to the manual if there is something that is unclear.

Best,
/Hans

Hey Hans.

Just wanna say, this seems impressive. I don't have a use case or need for it personally at this time (don't use orchestral libraries, and tune other software instruments with MTS-ESP), but if that ever changes I'll be looking at this for sure. Congrats on the release! :)
