Snap Rame - the breath sound from 2:21 min. onwards

How to make that sound...

Turned out more challenging than I thought:

(The sound from 2:21-2:27.)

The noise/breath wasn't the problem but the EQing of that supersaw in Serum (w/o using external plugins). So I need help for the basic sound w/o the breath/noise.

In my version something really disturbing still keeps oscillating in the mids that doesn't belong there and as I change the EQing dips or filter frequencies the sound gets either too weak again or loses its target character...

After 2 or 3 hours let's say I'm stuck. Possibly there might be an easy solution and I just took a wrong path somewhere.

Bluesawsq, thank you so much!
But you got the wrong reference. You've created the fast staccato background rhythm in 16th notes that runs through the song.
There's no breathy noise in those sounds I was referring to. Still, it's interesting to see what kind of waveshape you used for these other sounds.

Anyways, I meant the rather slow breathy melody in the foreground that comes in (mostly) legato long half and fourth notes:
f# (1/4), g# (1/2), f#, f, f#, d#, f#, f, f#, f, c# (long punctuated half note) ...
(I haven't thought about the key the piece is in yet, so it could also start with g flat... resp.)

I think this sound is also based on supersaws but I'm open for other suggestions, too.
This melody is very soft but still much in the foreground.

I guess you mean this pulse unison lead sound.

Update:
A new less plucky version of the Serum preset
Snap Rame Pulse unison v2.zip
Here is the main melody using vox lead + pulse unison lead, together with string pad and supersaw arp:
https://voca.ro/1np6yFKwadaP
The vox lead is created in Kontakt using ZZZ Vox and Vox Noise2 samples from JD-800.
The string pad is created using three layered string sounds from Kontakt, Xpand!2 and Spire. The original is probably something more simple.

Hey! I see you're also a Snap! fan?
They issued many an interesting song in those days!
"Eternity" is still my favorite b.t.w. - I mean soundwise.

Besides obviously sharing some fascination for this song :tu: , what I liked about your patch was your approach of using a thin and vibrating unison pulse instead of a unison saw. Thin pulse and saw waves are related in sound character and I think that might already solve some of the issues I was facing while trying to fine-tune the sound. I'll have to check this in more depth, so I'll reevaluate my patch over the weekend and try this way, too.

However, if I may suggest so, I would not use such a snappy and sharp plucky beginning for this particular sound as you did, even in the mix. :?: The sound seems overall very soft w/o sharp edges - but that's just my impression. I even used some attack time on the amp envelope...

Anyways, I'll have a closer look at this again.

I'll try and also check out what you suggested for the vox/noise which I don't fully understand yet.
I believe you got that noise character exactly right when I check out the link you posted. This must be the kind of noise they used but I don't know if I'll find the noise sample in Serum or elsewhere online to import it into Serum? I used that "S-Sound" in Serum which kind of worked. Don't know yet...

Tnx again for all that valuable input on that song!

This is definitely not done in a standard way. As in not with a filtered pulse and some noise.
The wind/noise is what really makes it different, the "flute" harmonics not so much.
I can guarantee this comes from a sampler/rompler with that specific wind noise in it.

You can spend ages trying to filter white noise but it would still sound like crap compared to actual "flute wind"

That noisy breathy vox sound is a sample. You can tell that by all noise freqs following the keyboard.

Can't remember artist (perhaps Art of Noise?) or song title, but there was this song that had the sample playing a simple melody in eights:

Code: Select all

| C C C C G G G F | F F F F F F F F |

Art of Noise indeed, "Moments in Love" was the song

Google that, and you must find origins of the sample.

Yes, I know. The noise is best added by just using the right sample as a top layer. Don't worry too much about it...

Choos, what's your approach to the sound w/o the noise?
Would you also go for an edited version of a unison pulse or start out with a supersaw? I now wonder how you would do this and what exact frequencies you would filter out. Can you also try and add a version of it for further comparisons? :hyper:
I'm just looking for the sound layer w/o the noise.

Far from impressive but this is close ish

The pulse didn't sound right by itself but then it lacked some of that square
so I combined them

Awesome, Choos! I love the result. To me it's impressive because of its seeming simplicity which is the kind of art I'm always looking for. My patch was getting more and more complex which is the best indicator for it having been wrong.

You guys showed me that I was clearly on a wrong track with this flute like sound. I think what I did was to change a supersaw into pulse by EQing it to the moon. I lost so many frequencies that I even had to use a compressor to make up for it again. This is possible but... :dog:
You're right: this is the right basis for this sound. Bluesawsq chose a pulse that quite elegantly fluctuates in width over time. Choos layered pulse and square together with different volume levels and specific settings that fit together well to build up that sound.

Thank you for the patches that contain all the details I was looking for!

The breathy sound was the famous ARR1 sample from the fairlight.

For the Snap Rame track the fundamental and lowest harmonics are way too loud in the ARR1 sample. You need to high-pass filter the original sample or use key-tracked high-pass filter in synth/sampler.

In Vital add Filter 1 type 'Analog: 12dB' , high-pass (Blend = 2.0), Resonance = 0%, Cutoff = 19.0 semitones, and KEY TRK 100%.
