I'm currently debating on whether or not to use my funds to replace Ozone's Multiband compressor with Fabfilter's Pro-MB, or if my money would be better spent buying Soothe2 for vocal and overhead drum processing in a small room.

What would you do? Thanks in advance!

I have Soothe2 and I demoed the Pro-MB. I can't see Pro-MB replacing Soothe2 for me. Also, I don't know the price, you're going to buy Pro-MB for, but if it's close to stock, I'd say DynOne3 (although it's heavy on a CPU) is a strong competitor especially on sale.

For me Pro-MB is a different tool than Sooth 2. If the reasons why aren't obvious, ask and I wil try and answer. For me, I wouldn't consider one for the other - they are for solving different problems and effects. In fact, you could use them both at the same time: Pro-MB to shape the tone of vocals and Soothe 2 to dynamically smooth out any resonant artifacts. I think, maybe, Soothe 2 is more generally useful than Pro-MB so if it came to choosing one, I'd recommend Soothe 2. And keep an eye our for a good price on Pro-MB later.

In my opinion Soothe (and Spiff) are incredible tools but they require a good ear to get the most out of them. So keep in mind that it's easy to make these tools sound bad because they rely on the operator to dial in the best sound while providing a wide range of effect.

I should rephrase. I'm not putting Soothe2 against Pro-MB. They are different tools. I'm saying I have Ozone, and I'm either going to replace Ozone with Pro-MB for my multi-compression plugin of choice, or use the money I'd otherwise spend on that for Soothe2 for correcting room stuff for vocals and drum overheads.

I have both and I often use soothe2 more for vocal and OH. It's just quicker.

Pro-MB i tend to use more in a macro way.

i'm really really digging TBProAudio's DSEQ.
it's cheaper than Soothe, and versatile... quite CPU efficient too.

I really like Pro-MB workflow wise and its my go-to multiband.
I recently sold iZotone MPS3 because i just didn't use it that much. I just reached for FF everytime.
It sound great tho - and its an incredible pack of plugins for cheaps.

depending on how much you (ab)use it, you might get a slight edge over Ozone in terms of flexibility and due to oversampling- tighter timing and less distortion. You also get Lookahead and generally more robust feature-set.

However, I'd might just go with Soothe 2 in that equation instead, it will bring more to the table than replacing Ozone with Pro-MB.
Or Pro-MB + DSEQ

I have both and clearly prefer Ozone. It just sounds better in my opinion.

Yeah - That's kind of what I was thinking. I don't really have a tool that Soothe2 is, so it may make more sense to just snap that up. Thanks for all of the advice!

So what did you end up going with?

I ask because I frequently find myself revisiting the predicament (Pro-MB vs. existing O5/O6 MB dynamics) over and over again...with about 1-2 years in between each bout of waffling!

Soothe 2 seems really useful...and easy. DSEQ3 seems good too, though it has a super-busy interface, and I can't demo it now because their website is down for maintenance until 4/12. Must be waxing the floors.

Really shouldn't be able to do anything with ProMB you can't with Ozone. Soothe2 however, opens new possiblities.

DSEQ3 is a more flexible tool, and so has more controls. If you don't need or want that flexibility, and have plenty to spend, then Soothe2 remains viable.

Side note: I have no idea if this factors into TBProAudio's web closure, but it's also Passover. There's some other stores, like BH Photovideo that are also closed (though at bhphotovideo you can still browse, just not fulfill any orders).
