An even cheaper option is the Moog Subsequent 25. It's basically a cut down Subsequent 37. It sounds more modern than the Model D. But damn it sounds good. And it comes with a VST/AU editor that allows you to easily access all of the "hidden" parameters. I'm thinking of picking up one for myself.

I have an "almost" SE-3X and a Subsequent 37. I updated my Nova/Angel Dust edition SE-1X with the SE-3X eprom, which makes it almost identical to the 3X, sans the extra Roland and Arp filter models and the two-stage fuzz (the SE-1X Nova fuzz switch is fixed to one stage, enganged/disengaged). I personally wouldn't trade it (or an SE-3X, or my S37) for a Model D, but I don't think most people who are buying the Moog reissue are as interested in the modern conveniences (e.g., display, storage) and additional filter types as they are in owning an authentic reissue of a highly renowned classic.

An upgraded SE-1X is nothing to sneeze at. It has a different sound than the Sub 37. IMO, its tone is probably closer to a classic Minimoog (if the Moog filter is installed). Unfortunately my two 24 space racks are completely full. I would have to pull one of my 3U synths such as my Nord Rack 3 out of its rack and find someplace else to put it.

I'm really surprised that the Subsequent 25 isn't much more popular than it seems to be (or, maybe it is and I'm just not aware of it). I recently sold my Sub 37 to upgrade to my Subsequent 37, but I gave the 25 a hard look. Looking at the cost:features:sound ratio, it's a pretty amazing bargain IMO, yet it rarely seems to get mentioned.

Yeah, the SE-1X (including Nova editions) came standard with the 24 dB Moog-style filter, plus the integrated 12 dB SEM-style filter. It definitely sounds much different than my Moog Sub37/Subsequent 37, Slim Phatty, and the Minitaur that I also owned. It's got a weight/beef to it that just thumps and shakes the walls. I don't make hiphop, but it doesn't take more than a few minutes of playing with it to realize why it was such a staple in that genre.
