After building up a nice DAWless setup, I'm starting to want my DAW again

Alesis HR-16B synced to Sansui WS-X1 multi-track tape recorder! I had to play in all the S-50 and K4 parts by hand because I didn't know about sequencers.

Wow this has to be my most successful thread ever here! So a drawback I'm encountering right now is how to organize all my gear, as I only have a certain amount of table space. I wanted to buy a 4-tier stand for my Volcas, and thought I had, only for my order to be cancelled due to the seller abandoning that product line for a new line of stands that really don't meet my needs as well and also look more expensive. Guess I'll look elsewhere. One advantage of the daw is, no pushing cables out of your way and constantly reorganizing gear.

Plus, now take all that stuff somewhere else. Yes, you can take an MPC or Polyend with you, it's not that hard, but your laptop is probably already with you everywhere you go.
Last NAMM, I packed up my studio to use at our booth at the show. That killed my productivity for months, it completely disrupted my flow.

Yes I've been thinking of solutions for this, maybe a sampler that will stream unlimited length of audio from an sd card and let me crossfade between tracks, like maybe an Octatrack(but that uses an internal HD). Aren't laptops supposed to be untrustworthy for live performance?Uncle E wrote: Wed Apr 12, 2023 4:42 pm Plus, now take all that stuff somewhere else. It will, been there done that. That won't happen with hardware, unless it wears out or I drop it.

I have found them to be more reliable than any hardware set-up I ever had, mostly because there are far fewer possible points of failure. I couldn't count the number of times I've missed soundcheck or been late onto the stage because someone plugged a MIDI cable into the wrong port or because one piece of gear or another wouldn't make any sound because something hadn't been set up correctly or something has blown up when someone plugged it into the wrong power adapter. And most of my digital synths, especially samplers, have crashed on me in the middle of a song.Moe Shinola wrote: Wed Apr 12, 2023 4:52 pmAren't laptops supposed to be untrustworthy for live performance?
OTOH, I have never really had any issues since we started performing with a computer. It's possibly my favourite aspect of working ITB - switch the computer on and everything just works. The other cool aspect of it is that you can carry a full back-up, in the form of a second laptop, without any hassle at all. KMFDM have two MB Pros set up side by side, playing in sync, so they can switch from one to the other instantly if there's a problem. (Apparently they used to have problems with them overheating in small, sweaty venues.) I've never felt like we needed to go that far, even my desktop machine was completely reliable the first time we toured Europe, way back in 2005. Things have only gotten better and better since then.

The only people who argue over DAW vs DAWless are internet morons that spend more time on here than making music.
Honestly no one really cares what the f**k you use! The users here pander to this site that just exists to sell you stuff.

Can't stop laughing. I'm always ping-ponging like this. When my DAW is perfectly set up and everything is running smoothly - I itch for going 100% HW. When that is done, I wish to the computer again.Moe Shinola wrote: Fri Mar 24, 2023 4:51 am Absolve me, KVR priesthood! Just kidding. But yeah, it's so easy and quick working in the box.
I'm starting to think I have confused making music with building Legos.

Grass is always greener syndrome
Only HW setup I ever really had access to was pretty primitive compared to now. Stylin for a poor person in 1986 but no way.
I DO miss a Frippertronics 1 reel over 2 Revox 77s fed back to input like I had at school but there are other strategies today.

Indeed, grass is always greener in the other bag! when faced with difficult choices always choose both.
