Interestingly, the captures I use in my templates are all from tone.net.

I found enough great sounding tones in the standard package, and indeed you can download more from tone.net, so no need for max. I am sure they have some nice tones though.

I’m telling you, I think the engineers over there are doing great work, but the whole business end of things… they seem pathetic.
IK has never done that.

Their pricing model is based on enticing new customers with "crossgrade for a discount if you own any IK product over $99" where everyone qualifies, but there are no upgrade discounts for prior users (example Amplitube 4 users didn't get a bigger discount on Amplitube 5 than anyone else who owns any IK product over $99) or ways to upgrade between versions (outside of buying Custom Shop modules for Amplitube, or individual T-Racks to round out your collection).

It's very convoluted and not very customer-focused IMO. But it's nothing new. That's how they've been doing business for a LONG time now. Every time they release a major update to a product, there are pages and pages of complaints about it, or people asking questions because they're confused.

But, see if support can help/work with you. Maybe they'll offer deals if you contact them directly.
Yeah, I’d forgotten about this, as I’m one of their customers who don’t buy until they do a super group buy thing, and get their plugins for a crazy low price. I can’t remember what I paid for the last group buy, but it was something ridiculously low, so I can’t complain. I just don’t understand why they don’t just charge fair prices, offer fair upgrades and have the occasional sale. Maybe offer a break on the initial few weeks of a new plugin, or let people buy it at a discount when it’s in public beta. I used to buy a lot of IK stuff before they became so pestering with their marketing methods.

I receive their newsletter. Often more than once a day. Right to the spam folder, where I might peruse them if I'm bored.
