But aren't they almost subscription already? Sorry for being daft but their existing model is a bit like Waves WUP, no?jamcat wrote: Wed Apr 12, 2023 9:23 pm I predict version 5 will drop license transfers and be subscription only.

No, because you can use the software indefinitely without having to keep paying.

I'm not trolling you, just being ignorant as a guy who uses Live as the main platform. But that's how it is with Waves WUP as well, no? If you get the WUP one year sub you get all the updates for one year. And when it's done, the only difference is that you're not getting any more updates. But the plugs work perfectly.pdxindy wrote: Thu Apr 13, 2023 5:12 amNo, because you can use the software indefinitely without having to keep paying.
That's at least how the Bitwig update sub plan worked before. But maybe that's changed?

If they would switch to a subscription model, which would force one to pay continuously as e.g. Avid, I predict, that would break their business.pdxindy wrote: Thu Apr 13, 2023 7:15 amYes, same thing... sorry, I though Waves was more a pay to play thing.DrGonzo wrote: Thu Apr 13, 2023 5:20 amI'm not trolling you, just being ignorant as a guy who uses Live as the main platform. Pro Tools only supports its own plugin format and is subscription only, and hasn’t gone belly up, so why not Bitwig?
It’s only a matter of time. Bitwig is already halfway there for both.

Again like in the Ableton thread you forget that every medal has 2 sides...a9k1tp wrote: Wed Apr 12, 2023 4:47 pm When Ableton releases an new device, it's a new device. When Bitwig releases a new device, it's like endless new devices.
If Ableton releases a devices it´s well thought through and gives you tons of options right out of the box with a very pleasant sound...
If Bitwig releases a new device you have to spend time over time to get some pleasant sounding out of it...
Is Bitwig more flexible with it´s devices?? Yes, it is...
Does everybody needs this flexibility?? No, many don´t want to build their own piano before they can play... they just want to play...
Musician vs. Modular Nerd... it depends what you like better... Preset users and non tweakers will probably be not so at home with Bitwig´s internal devices but they might be very much with Ableton´s...

No read, only complainbillcarroll wrote: Wed Apr 12, 2023 3:26 pm It would also help if people would read the release notes so they understand how the new browser works. Bitwig included about 2 pages of detail re: the new browser in the release notes.

Protools was an industry standard prior to going subscription. Film schools and most audio schools trained their students on it and if you ran a commercial studio you could expect to have to work with some Protools projects. AVID could force a subscription model and survive it. Bitwig is niche. It doesn’t have the industry backing or the lineage that Protools enjoys even if undeserved.

You really can‘t compare industry standard vs. market entry level, what BW still is.
