Constant need to unplug and replug audio interface (Behringer UMC404HD)

Hi guys, so I have a UMC404HD and headphones plugged directly into it. Every time i go idle for a bit (meaning no sound is playing from my pc), I can't play any sound or video. Music apps just bug out and for video, for example on YouTube, they just are frozen and buffering. The fix is simple really, I just unplug and replug them and that fixes it. But it is kind of a burden having to do that like 10 times an hour.

I have scoured the web for possible solutions but haven't managed to find a working fix yet, so if any of you have had similar problems or know what the issue is, please help.

I'm running Windows 11 and here are the things I tried so far:
· Reinstalling Realtek and Behringer drivers
· Unchecking power-saving options on my PC's USB ports
· Making sure the Hz rate is the same in my DAW and in default
· Clearing cache of my USB ports with USBDeview

I suspect it is just Behringer drivers misbehaving and not real solution is possible

Might be a long shot, but you could try Asio4All, or maybe better https://github.com/koord-live/KoordASIO and setting it in "Shared Mode". The latter behaves more stable for me, as some other sound could come from anywhere and that messes up the driver exclusiveness.

You can also make sure that your Windows does not play sounds: Change system sounds -> no sounds.

I'd continue down this avenue of something timing out the USB port itself.

Is the whole PC in performance mode?

USB ports have Selective Suspend disabled? (I'd double check)

Tried other USB ports on your PC?

Tried audio interface on a different PC?

Tried a different USB cable?

Other than that no idea. But USB / USB Power management is where I'd continue to look first.

Just a thought...You haven't got exclusive mode checked in the windows control panel sound settings have you?

I tried some of the other solutions people posted, none of them worked, but I just uninstalled the drivers 10 minutes ago and it seems its gone for now.

I'll write later if it fixed it totally or not so other people can see the post if they have the same problem.

I don't know why that happens, maybe some conflict between different audio drivers??

Also, the interface works as intended without the behringer drivers, so whats its use anyways? I am a total noob

In the past audio processes weren't prioritized by Windows, DSP didn't get all the CPU resources it needed and you got audio glitches and lots of latency. Back in the late 90's Steinberg developed ASIO:

ASIO bypasses the normal audio path from a user application through layers of intermediary Windows operating system software so that an application connects directly to the sound card hardware. Each layer that is bypassed means a reduction in latency (the delay between an application sending audio information and it being reproduced by the sound card, or input signals from the sound card being available to the application). In this way, ASIO offers a relatively simple way of accessing multiple audio inputs and outputs independently.

As time has passed CPU's have become much more powerful and Windows has also improved its handling of DSP. So if you are just making some music, without recording, a recent computer doesn't struggle that much.

But if you are recording and need low latency you still need a dedicated ASIO driver, also good ASIO drivers like for example from RME allow high numbers of I/O at low latency and low CPU use.

In the past also USB interfaces were problematic because USB wasn't designed for handling "high priority" data streams, most entry level USB interfaces had terrible latency even with ASIO drivers. The difference with PCI interfaces was huge.

In recent years USB3, thunderbolt and much better USB drivers have closed that gap, and brands that had horrible USB ASIO drivers as presonus now have very good drivers for interfaces like the quantum.

Did you also go to the behringer device settings and disable any power saving there (separate from the USB controller settings) I had one device that constantly disappeared from windows while not is use and this was the way I got it running. I have had good results also using Asio4all with devices that don't use a dedicated control program (totalmix etc). Good luck.

I don't know anymore, I literally tried everything and nothing works. The only thing that works is uninstalling the Behringer driver but then I cant hook up properly on my DAW

When you installed the driver you didn't have the interface plugged in did you? Some devices are quite picky about this and require driver installation prior to plugging them in.

Also (I'm sure you have..) but do you have the driver version 5.51?

I have the UMC204HD with the latest drivers installed on Windows 10 and it gives me minor issues now and then but not to the extent of yours.
I remember one of the later drivers made it near unusable last year so I rolled back to an even earlier driver and it was working again.
Maybe you could go through the list of older drivers and try them out one at a time.

Ok, so what I did lastly was plug it into a USB 2.0 port instead of the 3.0 i used and for now, that seems to fix it and i have no idea why
