I had a Nord G2 that I should have kept, but at the time I was of the mindset that I didn't want any hardware that was dependent on a computer. :dog:

I still play around with the demo sometimes, and think it was of the best thought out synths ever.
It's a shame it's not still around.

To be honest, Micro Q was never on my list. Even Nord Lead 3 was pretty low on the list.
Virus Series YES, JP8000/8080 YES Yamaha AN1X YES, among newer ones Korg KingKorg & Novation Summit (not as much as the others though). I guess it's a matter of taste.
Jp8000 and AN1-X don't use motorolla cpu's for executing code , which is what the project is all about .
Of course, I understand that.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if developers released Virus C emulator, but without telling that it's emulator and without classic Virus presets :D
It's just "a new Osirus plugin"...
I would like the interface and sound quality, but I'd call it a bit "retro". I didn't own hardware Virus so I wouldn't realize that sound parameters are identical. I would not be happy with CPU optimization in a "new" 2023 synth. Since I know it's Virus emulation I find CPU usage low, otherwise, I would find it high

I suppose the main strength of Virus, both hardware and emulator, is the availability of interesting, production ready presets.

glasspipe wrote: Sat Feb 04, 2023 9:18 pm How do you save patches? Everytime I try to load a saved patch it doesn't show the .syx.mid patch I saved.
I'm trying to figure that out too.

Edit: load a sound, edit it, and hit save. I get a message saying I can't save in that folder and would I like to save under user. Create a folder in user, and give the program a name and save it with a .syx extension.
Change to a different sound and then hit load. Navigate to the folder and click on the saved sound.
The displayed name won't change in the main display or the one on the right side of the load screen, but the sound changes and plays the new sound.

That's as far as I've gotten.
Thanks!

Save state works. If you are experiencing otherwise, please report it to the Discord. However, if you are saying it because of what others have said, they may have been talking about the alpha version from a few days ago. This was fixed with the release of the beta version.

Me, too, but once I started using the emulator, I fell in love with it. Mediocre hardware from 20 years ago somehow still holds up. Or maybe it just has its own sound that is different than plugins.
Even Nord Lead 3 was pretty low on the list.
Agreed. I'd rather see Nord Lead 1 or 2, which are more unique sounding than the Nord Lead 3, IMO.
Virus Series YES
Done
JP8000/8080 YES
It'll never happen (explanation on the Discord)
Novation Summit
They will never do current products unless the manufacturers go in on it with them.
Most of the sounds on Mircro Q are so harsh, cutting, almost "screaming", it takes a lot of work to get mixable sounds.
I use it for color and texture. I'm using things like DIVA and UA Minimoog for foundation parts, then using Vavra to fill in the sound around them. Sounds great that way and isn't hard to mix.
I am very happy that I can run Virus C on a PC, though it's more for sentimental reasons. More than 10 years ago, native VST synths simply outgrown hardware versions. With Diva and Spire I can do all I want... Perhaps it's ironic that Diva sounds more analog than all of VA hardware synths.
Yes, no doubt. I don't even put these old VA's in the same category, they have a virtual analog sound and modern VA's have an actual analog sound. Both are cool and many great albums were made with a mix of VA's and actual analogs.

For those struggling with saving patches .
The vst 2 version can save patches in the good old fxb* ,fxp* format
Eyeball exchanging
Soul calibrating ..frequencies

I'm getting beautiful arps out of it , modifying the presets using the mod matrix. Really nice tones , fm like but their own character. A bit of that lo-fi grunge that I have come to really enjoy. It is saving the presets with the Cubase preset manager successfully for me and recalling multi and single patches properly through the Steinberg interface.

This is also working with VST3 with Cubase , I have been testing it this afternoon on a PC with Windows 10.

I tried the vst2 version and have the same save options (.syx or .mid) as with the vst3.
Sometimes vst2 will load and display the correct sound, whereas with vst3,
I've only gotten it to load and play the sound, but not display it correctly in the screen.
Cubase on Win 11.

Speaking of Nord, does anyone remember this piece of software?

I remember having it and playing with it. I think you could hook it up in VSTHost, but it's been a long time.
It's still up on Github. Works with CSound.

Yes it's awesome - still have it on my old iMac

btw just installed Osirus - it is amazing! I have all the ROM banks for the Virus C but not the RAM ones and they don't seem to come 'built in' - does anyone have them (also the Virus B banks I don't have but are they much different?)

The DSP is amazing on this I'm running it with latency set to 32 at 9600 and it's not even registering on my CPU (OK it's M1Max) - just tried 192000 and still barely a blip

Ok from the Virus site the ROM that it comes with includes a mid bank 'ABM' (which should be RAM A, B and Multis) which starts with 'Overture CK' but the ROM that Osirus uses has internally a different set of patches that start with 'Autobend BC' - which is the correct set of RAM and ROM patches for the Virus C?

Also I can't actually see how you load multis

You should ask Christoph Kemper :hihi:

OK according to this the ABM bank from the Official site is the correct one:

Maybe the other banks are from an earlier Virus C OS?

There is a reason why we're getting all this stuff for free... It's outdated.
After several days of exploring Virus C, I have returned to Spire and I have to say it simply blows away the Virus in every department: supersaws, effects, clarity, workflow. Perhaps TI2 is a bit better, but it's similar engine.
Most of Micro Q patches are strange, though some really stand out and hold your attention. The good ones are REALLY good, unique. But they are quite rare.
Anyways, I hope Vavra final version will come soon. I like having Virus & Micro Q in VST, both synths have unique character.
Nord Lead 3, if they do it, nice, if not, doesn't matter.

NOne of the stuff is outdated , they are still perfectly fine music making machines with shitloads of character .
The virus never did it for me ( always been a clavia fan ) , just wait till the waldorf microwave xt drops :tu:
