topaz wrote: Thu Apr 27, 2023 1:24 pm It's a total joke, 100s of soul funk artists recycle grooves over and over, just like all genres. The melody and lyrics are totally different. That's all that matters or music is dead.

Who can't find another song inside every other song.
Amen

At least there is some similarity in groove so you could maybe see the case. I thought the blurred lines decision was worse though. Basically the decision was if your backing tracks sounds inspired by someone else's music we can sue you. Doesn't matter if the melody and chords have nothing much to do with each other.

The first person to write a drum and bass record using amen could be taking cases out forever! Who wrote the first 12 bar blues?? Sorry copyrighted the first 12 bar blues. Cases for ever. Overdriven 909, cases for ever.
Agreed, especially here the groove is super vanilla, like heard 1000 times... maybe ed got it from a sample pack... (Marvin's probably not, lol)
could someone find the groove on an older record? Then they could sue too

I seem to remember the Prodigy doing something like that. They had sampled the Jedi Knights (the musicians) and when this was pointed out to them they bought the rights to the original sample the Jedi Knights used in order to avoid a court case.
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Another reason to love the prodigy ...

The common Factor here guys is a Laywer that opportunistically exploits the copyright system.. I am sure if Gaye lived it would have been different. As someone previously said this kind stuff is gonna basically damage the music industry. .

It occurs to me that A.I. will eventually write some music that someone will sue for copyright about.

AI is trained on a set of data that is ... music from artists... so yeah.... But I guess it is quite easy for developers to train the AI to check if the produced music is different enough from the sources.... Maybe they can fine tune depending of the law suits lol.

There's too many moving parts to this. I don't think he plays drums or bass. I don't know if he whipped it up at home and sent it to be mastered, or he sat in a studio and told his producer what he wanted and this is the result.

Found on bbc news concerning my comment
"The claim over Thinking Out Loud was originally lodged in 2018, not by Gaye's family but by investment banker David Pullman and a company called Structured Asset Sales (SAS), which has acquired a portion of the estate of Let's Get It On co-writer Ed Townsend.
Seeking $100m (£90m) in damages, they allege that Sheeran and his co-writer Amy Wadge "copied and exploited, without authorisation or credit" the Gaye song, "including but not limited to the melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping".
Ms Wadge, and various expert musicologists, are expected to testify at the New York trial.
This is not the only trial Sheeran is facing over Thinking Out Loud, which went to number one in the UK in 2014 and won song of the year at the Grammy Awards in 2016.
SAS has filed a second case, which is currently on pause, while a separate suit by another portion of Townsend's estate is awaiting trial."

Its all about bloodthirsty non-musicians screwing musicians to exploit vague copyright claims for their own greedy corporate gain..

I find the fact that they make it a racial issue really disturbing...
It's almost like they never heard of hip hop and sampling.

After seeing Sheeran's court appearance I'd just like to know: At what point did he sign his soul over to Satan?

no one who looks like that, can be more than a 1 hit wonder, in these days when every pop star is also modelesque.

i did not see the court appearance however, did he burst in to a ball of fire when swearing on the bibble?
