Valhalla Room vs Vintage Verb

I did! Love it mostly for the otherwordly "wet" effects to spice stuff up.

I did skip on Delay because i find Timeless3 (90% of all my delays) + ColourCopy enough, although it does look nice

Yeah, those otherworldly effects can be amazing.

I find for something's I can't get anything out of it but sometimes it's magic. Like a Blackhole type thing with movement.

The delay yeah the other things maybe cover, but it's also pretty flexible, with space echo type stuff etc

I'm super happy with VVV and Valhalla Delay. Really not sure if it makes sense to get Room if you already have VVV. But when trying around with the demos, I immediately liked Valhalla Shimmer. It seems to be a bit less maintained and feature rich (no presets for me?), but it has a very nice sound that I also couldn't quite replicate with Valhalla Delay in shimmer modes.

So any suggestions here on what are indeed good complements?

Timeless 3 is overly complicated for just needing a delay (good for sound design) - Valhalla is more easier and faster, and better, to use for general delay purposes. I think it's better than Colour Copy, as well. More flexible.

Valhalla Room sounds to metallic too easily. I passed on that long ago. I did get VVV as my first 3rd party reverb but have long since demoted it, as I like many others better (though the new Palace mode is good). I find VVV builds up too much low mids and is too hard to control.

Of the two, VR or VVV, I'd definitely choose VVV in a heartbeat.

This will be unpopular, but this thread needs a dissenting voice.

I have all of the Valhalla reverbs plus way too many others, including Pro-R. I just can't contain myself when a new product comes out and buy it on the spot. However, not all of those reverbs actually get used on a daily basis and they've organically sorted themselves in order of usefulness - for me, anyway.

First unpopular opinion: the one I use most is ValhallaPlate, followed by VRoom.

Second unpopular opinion: I was never a fan of actual vintage reverbs back in the day. Talking about vintage digital reverbs, not physical rooms, chambers, plates, etc. That's partly why Valhalla Vintage Verb is further down my list. It intentionally recreates some of the very artefacts that I didn't like in the old Lexicon stuff.

Third unpopular opinion: people obsess over reverbs unnecessarily. Unless your genre is one that uses reverbs as an instrument rather than a subtle enhancement, the choice of reverb isn't all that important. For me and the kind of music I make, my rule is that if you can distinctly hear the reverb there's too much of it.

On a side note, I also have way too many delays. Same deal - some that sounded good on paper turned out to be less useful in practice, e.g. FF Timeless. Since Valhalla Delay came along, it's been my default go-to delay. It often replaces a reverb.

I have both and use both quite regularly (I also use VPlate all the time). I do lots of different types of things, but I "usually" use Vroom for an actual space that I want to situate a source in. I use VV for long tails that fill in space in the mix. Both are easily nice enough to be one's only reverb, but I'd go with Vroom if I was going to only have one unless maybe you only do "atmospheric/ambient" soundscape type music. I could see VV being a bit better for that.

I've got a good one: the default preset.

If you need more tape heads, go into the multi-tap mode and turn on 3 taps.

Not sure that any of that is 'dissenting'. Just like your opinion, man.

Plate is great for a lot of use cases, especially with post reverb EQ. You don't have to like Vintage verbs, though of course many like VVV.

And whats wrong with obsessing over reverbs? Different reverbs can change the whole feel of a track.

Yeah, just the basic Tape mode, with the Space Echo Green background colour.

Alright. Will try that. Thing is modnetic has some extras and is sounding very used tape which I like, but will not work always for everything.

To really get the vibe of a Space Echo, you really need the spring reverb part, which Delay doesn’t have. You could throw something like Twangström after it or just go with an actual Space Echo emulation. I like the Arturia one.

Yeah, I should clarify that ValhallaDelay's default mode (Tape, Past) is based on a Space Echo, but it's obviously not a 1:1 Space Echo emulation. It's got no spring reverb. Different EQ controls. Different controls in general. Sounds incredible though.

If you want a 1:1 for Space Echo, there are lots of options, everyone seemingly with different favorites. Some options include:

1. AudioThing OuterSpace (my personal fav)
2. Modnetic
3. Arturia
4. IK Multimedia
5. UAD

...I'm probably even missing some.

I haven't been able to get a useful sound out of the IK one of those. Find it kinda baffling.

I feel the same way but some people absolutely love it. Amazes me how differently everyone hears things and how opinions on what "sounds good" can vary so wildly.
