How would you approach this bass sound?

Hi there, so I'm reworking a track of mine which would extremely benefit from a bass sound like this (starting at 0:53):

I don't need a 100% exact replica, but the problem is, I don't get even close. Using standard subtractive synthesis either lacks the clarity of the attack, or it sounds to thin/nasal when I scoop out the low end. I also tried FM. While I got somewhat the same balance between clear attack and solid low end, the timbre of the sound wasn't anything close. Any ideas?

Not sure of your competence in this regard, but it sounds like a very bread-and-butter bass sound.

I'd start with a couple of sawtooths in the same octave, detuned a bit, mixed inot a filter. Bring down filter frequency to take the high-end off, modulate that filter with an envelope (att and sus at 0, decay/release quite short (difficult to tell how to advise in this regard, synths are different) and increase the modulation depth until you can hear the top end of the saw tooth being taken off by the filter. It sounds like there's a touch of resonance in the filter as well, so maybe turn that up a tiny amount (again, this will depend on the filters your synth uses).

I knew I would get that answer... To be fair, that's what I thought at first, too.

I put it that way: In about 95% cases I get a sound close enough to what I want.

I tried what you recommended (and so much more), except instead of using detuned saws which I tried too), I used one pwm osc + a sub osc with phase reset to get a constant and precise attack sound.

Far from perfect but a start in Vital. Try some pulses instead of Saws
