Drawers can be very useful in your racks, though they can be problematic on a desk if you need to put other things in front of the drawers, meaning they won't open (easily). You can always do what I've done: put nothing in there and use it as storage space. I have 2x4U on my desk (which I'm actually using as monitor stands) that have 3U of gear in them (2 in one and 1 in the other, both at the top of the rack). I use the space below them to store my external hard drives, stash my tripod and gamepads when not in use, and various other random items that I like to have quickly to hand but don't need all the time.
It's at least worth considering that you don't necessarily need drawers to use the space for storage. Probably depends on what you need to find a home for whether that works for you or not. I don't want my external drives in a drawer, but I do want them out of the way, yet accessible.

Yep, I think that my DJ setup really helps here because you can mount the CD drive on top and then it also doubles as a dual retracting cup-holder. I have used blank panels with drilled holes (like pegboard) which look pretty cool, I have also had rack mount shelves which are good for non rack mountable equipment.
