RAM Upgrade?

Hi all,
I`m running a Windows 11 PC with a AsRockz360 Pro 4 board, i7-8700 3.2 GHz (overclocked to 4.0GHz) with 16GB Vulcan DDR4 2400MHz dual channel RAM. It`s a great performing system overall but using Harrison Mixbus V8 it tends to struggle a fair bit during even small projects. Would upgrading my Ram to 32 or possible 64 3600MHz give me any serious improvement in performance.

It is hard to diagnose performance problems remotely. You need to install a RAM monitor that would tell you whether you run out of RAM.

What OS are you using?

Task manager should tell you the amount of RAM and CPU usage.
16gb RAM is good for most projects. The current CPU is still powerful.

I have sincere doubts whether throwing more RAM at it solves the problem here. 16GB should be plenty for a "small project".

Advice: start with the smallest possible thing that works, then add one thing and measure its impact. Repeat until you found the culprit for slowness. You might have to bring in another host with an established track record on speed (I'd advice Reaper) for comparison.

My guess is that the overall slowness is caused by a combination of things you'd rather not miss. The things you use: the host, plugins and their presets, effects, etc. So either you select tools that are more efficient, or you keep on using the gold-plated stuff. But you pay the price: slowness.

Nope, TaskManager usually suffices to keep an eye on how much RAM is still free.

Open windows resource monitor and see how much memory your DAW is using and how much is free that will give you an indication of system ram usage when your project is up and running. It will show how much is in use and free.

What is your DAW ASIO performance meter saying is going on ? (gives you an indication of CPU/driver load) Most DAW's have them.

Do the "Processor idle demote/promote threshold" tweak
use the Windows power plan settings explorer utility
and unselect "Processor idle demote/promote threshold"

New options will appear and set the Threshold to 100%.

In Windows 11 you have more random stuff popping up that can induce stuttering compare to Windows 10 which is reasonably well-understood by the audio community.

Follow pictus' tips. Have an eye on resource monitor to spot things that do things that you don't need or want.

If your computer is struggling with small projects, it is more likely your CPU is the bottleneck, not the RAM. You may be able to reclaim more CPU resources by closing other programs/services running in the background.

I had an 8086 before it way able to run run projects with a fair amount of plugins.

I would recommend to check CPU usage on Process Tab in Task Manager, check as well RAM usage on perfomance Tab. And make sure that mothing else is chewing CPU besidr you DAW.

Check also with LatencyMon if there is a driver running wild chewing and cause high lantency.
