Xhun ZeroBox is great. I haven't used the Roland plugin yet but I was amazed at how good their TB-3 hardware is, and I'm guessing the plugin is the same thing.

^^^^This right here. Forget the software unless you need something modded out beyond 303 specs. The Behringer nails it for cheap (free Boss distortion pedal built in too). I don't even really like the 303 but the TD-3 is fun as hell to play with.

TD3 has the real 303 sequencer so it's a complete pain in the arse to use. You can play it via midi though, which is what I'd advise. Use Phoscyon or ABL3 to devise the sequence and play that over midi to the TD3. I haven't actually tried it yet, but apparently the ties/slides don't work properly that way, but the accents do. Consequently if you were to get only 1 303, then TD3 makes no sense. The whole point of Phoscyon & ABL are that they have sequencers that are very user-friendly. I used to have a real TB303 back in the day...that's exactly why I sold it...hateful sequencer. My 202 sits unused because of the same fkin awful sequencer. It just makes an expensive desk ornament. Some weirdos actually like using a 303 sequencer, but ignore them, they're masochists. The TD3 does sound really good, just horrible to programme.

ABL3 all the way , phoscyon 2 is also great ( much better compared to version 1 ) .
Xhun audio , tried the demo for fun when it was released , get's you in the ballpark but that's it , accent is way off , still an interesting characterfull synth .
ROFL about the Falcon video , shitloads of distortion over a generic filter

I don't think the TD3 does get the sound quite right. It's close but not as wet and squelchy sounding. The TD-3-MO (?) Seems to get the tone a bit better, but the extra controls take it out of the natural 303 range. Both great value though and yes pretty close.

ABL3 is great, just wish the sequencer was a bit expanded.

Phosycon 2 has also delivered a great emulation and the sequencer and extended featured are fantastic.

You never tried the Synthtribe sequencer tool? It's free from Behringer and makes pattern sequencing on the TD-3 a piece of cake. There are also some third-party editors available for it (although, I haven't tried them). That said, I agree that programming it from the front panel is not very convenient or intuitive, but it's also nowhere near as bad as people say it is and there are countless tutorials on it. Personally, I think it's great that Behringer kept the original workflow intact for those who want it, but then also offered a dead simple way to edit it for those who prefer that.

Besides, there's a one 'button(s) press' random mode, which is how I program mine!

(To clarify, you actually press two buttons at the same time, it's one press, two buttons)

I don't know about the 'best' but Xhun ZeroBox work flow is great for me, and I prefer the sound it makes.
And I like the much maligned Bass Transistor from Imageline.

Best ITB is ABL3 sounding very close to hardware TD-3.

I thought that's what everybody did? :D

Programming it from the Behringer SynthTool app is also a better alternative. It's the same as with Behringer Crave - just as with the TD3 the Crave really shines when using the sequencer with accents and slides. But programming the sequencer is an absolutely horrible experience.

But where to get a time machine to take you back to 1998, so you can use a 303 unironically?

And its free.
When you put a 303 through a distortion unit , it is pretty easy to make any other synth sound like an overdriven 303 because there are so many added harmonics .
Without distortion they sound just like any other regular synth .
All these videos ' make it sound like a 303 ' are just using shitloads of distortion to mask it .
