It was a performance, but it wasn't live yet and you couldn't see the rack.

Make Noise?

I found it… I see it’s 4am for me, and now I get it… 1am for you.

I might be on, I just hope I sleep a bit first. I’ll be watching Lakers vs Warriors tonight and I don’t usually sleep well after the games.

Yeah, I think that this is on purpose. Make Noise is watching this thread and they want me to see it first so I can come admit how wrong I am and to tell the story of when the great Noise came and Make Noise ushered in a new era. I can see it, I feel impactful...wait...maybe I mean impacted. Oh well, whatevs, I get to see it first in any case. I promise, I won't delay my posts.

  • Dual Digital VCO with eight simultaneous outputs, as well as two audio inputs, two gate inputs and ten CV inputs
  • Built on Make Noise’s new digital hardware platform, the most powerful digital module we have yet created
  • Coded by Tom Erbe of soundhack
  • Spectral Amplitude Modulation (SAM) creates spectral oscillations based on continuous analysis of the audio at the input
  • Spectral Array Oscillation (SAO) creates spectral oscillations based on stored sets of spectra called Arrays, which are created in the SAM mode
  • Each of the two VCOs operates independently in SAO or SAM, in any combination
  • High definition internal Frequency Modulation Bus with easy access to Harmonic Ratios via the Tuning Beacon
  • Sub-Oscillator/CV outputs give access to unique sub-oscillator shapes, envelope following, or clockable modulation sources
  • Sine and Sub operate independent of FM Bus modulation.
  • Follow and Sync operations on Side B for ease of use in dual oscillator patches, tuned FM, hard sync sweeps etc.

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

Perfect Circuit has a very long bit on this with useful detail.

To give Make Noise credit, it's far less fantastical than I expected it to be. I'll even say that, although I'm not likely a customer for a dual digital oscillator that isn't a bunch of other things as well, that it's not unreasonably priced, or more correctly, it's not any more unreasonably priced than other modules of this size and kind. In fact, at $599, it's less than what I would have guessed after seeing the size.

All that said, I think that the performance above sounds like, well, yawn. Let's see what loopop can do with it.

that's a big ass module :o

need more than the performance so far to make any decisions.

I’m thinking about it… It would replace Mindphaser (30hp) plus an extra 4hp somewhere, although it seems, moddemix might be expendable with this. I’ll need to see more first.

You know, I'm a peaceful, sort of hippie-ish person who believes that every species has its niche and blah blah blah but ants can just f**k right off out of here. I'd be happy to leave them alone but only if they stay out of my house.

Any time besides winter you can find the little shits crawling around our bathtub and sometimes in the kitchen. Doesn't matter how much we clean, seal up cracks, put out ant baits to poison them, scatter diatomaceous earth everywhere, they are relentless little bastards that keep coming back, and I despise them.

...

Um, anyway. Make Noise! I'm pretty thrilled. The possibilities seem pretty fantastic. Maybe I need to take a bit to calm down and at least see it in action with something better than that Brett Naucke mess was, so I haven't slammed the preorder button quite yet.

There are three reasons for me to be cautious:

- I had a Rossum Panharmonium for less than a week before I resold it. We just didn't get along very well at all. It always sounded somewhere on a spectrum between chiptunes and bad MP3, and it was too big and expensive for that. The latency ruined some of the uses it seemed like it could have been put to.

- It's big. I think it's appropriate sized for what it is, it's just that racking it will mean sacrifices. And it is JUST BARELY too deep to fit in my Pod60 :dog:

- That whole thing where I'm happy with the gear I have and don't need anything else... :scared:

Now the good:

- Making it a dual, DPO-like setup is a great way to win me over.
- The sounds in demos so far have a very wide range. And now that I can connect those sounds to the overall concept, I'm really optimistic that most people will be able to find ways to use this that suit them. The Brett Naucke demo was just not my thing, but the last few Instagram and YouTube teasers have had some great sound in them.
- It's both an oscillator and an effect, and a great way to leverage other audio sources. Some of that "it's a Telharmonic!" speculation no doubt came from feeding it chords.
- I feel like sticking with the spectral additive resynthesis thing might make it work better for me than Panharmonium did.

At 34HP, the only single module I have I could pull out to make room is Akemie's Castle. But since I've already compared some of the demos to that, I think that would work. Also this seems like it might disrupt things more than that, if I wind up liking it -- I want to try it and see what happens. Not going to sell off any gear *first* though.

I really like the functionally mirrored layout, and the partitioning/segmented graphics and even the fonts.

yup, just the hp is a bit much
id need a new case for sure, even a small one adds to the cost...

it does sound quite lush too, which im not sure is my thing, i mean it sounds great don't get me wrong, just not so vurty. (so far)
although the earlier performance was a bit more glitchy and my kind of thing, im not sure how much of that was this, or morphagene in to this?

And of course I’m considering being reckless, selling first and preordering.

I still want to see more content than the demo. I wasn’t impressed by the performance but between the teasers and various sound in moments of the performance, I think I could get along with this.

on the other hand, it may lead to some folk ditching older modules to make space, so the echophon dream may happen :o or a reasonably priced second morphagene
