If the sound of a voice or singing technique was copyright protected it would be the end of freedom. Artistic freedom is more important than copyright!
Imagine your guitar sounds like guitar of X- copyright violation!
Your high speed solo is in the style of Y - copyright violation!
You record in a studio the same Steinway like X, Y, Z - copyright violations!
I used Uhe Diva's preset 109, so you are not allowed to use it any more, otherwise - copyright violation!
How stupid!
Let's remember, music is just a vast mass-product today. What is a mass product worth anyway?!
How easy to write lyrics today.
Give AI 1-10 reference lyrics (lyrics that you like)
I take Visions by Stevie Wonder, just one reference
Then add 3-20 keywords that refer to the desired topic of your song.
1. Jealousy 2. Doubts 3. Anger
Press enter. Do you like it, then just take it or ask AI to give you as many variations you want or add some keywords.
Just aboit 3 more additional informations AI wants to know and your lyrics will be written immediately. You have the freedom to add or change whatever you want.
Never been that easy!

But that is exactly what happened when the estate of Marvin Gaye sued Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams over similarities in style between "Blurred Lines" and "Got To Give It Up," and shockingly won.
Just recently, Ed Sheeran beat another lawsuit over a Marvin Gaye song, this one claiming similarities in the chord progression of "Thinking Out Loud" to "Let's Get It On."

I had an uncomfortable thought about this tech. I've decided there'll be no recordings of my voice anywhere on teh interwebs. The unpleasant consequences of perfect impersonation, at least at a superficial level, by bad actors is something to consider. This and deep-fake video together could be a true menace.

What may be your point here? Okay, I get that you posted after only reading the thread title and ignoring the actual content of the thread, but do you really think everybody else should do the same?
If just the very ignorant would post there would be no discussion at all - then every thread would go like this:
- hey
- what?
- not true!
- yeah
- stoopit nonsense!
- yay
- nope
- so not ture
- nope false!
- disagree
- agree 1000%
- idiot
- idjutz all of you
- lurn to spell
- OMG modz plz ban!!!
So yeah, it needs guys like you for the occassional larf, but too much of that and the forum is finished.
If you actually watch the Rick Beato video that the OP references, which talks about the new AI technology this thread is about, the you should be able to assess that the thread-title is rather misleading and can be basically ignored for the course of the discussion. The thread-titel most definitely does not state a fact that you could reasonably pull up in the discussion to make a sane point. That's just insanely absurd.
And btw: after that "woke"-post of yours I really loathe you, so you shouldn't make it so easy for me to humiliate you as I will most probably gladly accept the offer.

So... to bring the thread back on course:
the way I understand it what this AI technology does is to analyze the voices in regards to certain parameters that make it distinguisable from other voice such as formants, overtone-structure and what not and then alters the input signal in regards to these parameters.
But since these voice characteristics aren't the factor that makes a singer sound like themselves you'd still not sound like that person unlike you actually sing like them.
Which is why that AI Curt Cobain singing Blackhole Sun sounds more like Chris Cornell with a cold singing Blackhole Sun and not like Curt Cobain at all.

Well, my understanding, after watching the video was that A.I. was creating virtual voices based on real voices and their capability. For example that guy from Oasis. Some of the phrasing was not quite right for that singer. A.I. was close but not 100% there yet.
To explain where I'm coming from. I was thinking that we could have an advanced VOCALOID type instrument. Only in this version of VOCALOID, we could have famous voices 'ripped' by A.I..
This would include a singers unique vibrato, phrasing etc.
So, if I was pitching songs to Iron Maiden for example, and I had a Voice emulation of Bruce Dickinson, I could show the band in demo form how I envisaged the song. They could then take it from there if they were interested of course.
Maybe a person could sing the song badly themselves and then have the voice app do a Bruce Dickinson interpretation of it.
That's just one (or two) idea(s).

I think it wasn't quite right because the person singing wasn't doing that quite right.
Re "creating virtual voices": but where is all the actual content coming from? The lyrics, the melody, the phrasing, the articulation? The bit of info that's there is the Beato video hints at a kind fo "deepfake"-technology.
For faces it also requires a real person in front of the camera actually miming. Of course you could of course theoretically generate all this from scratch using something like the Unreal-Engine, but that would be waaaay too much work for much waaay too unrealistic results.
Even those who use the Unreal Engine (and similar tech) for character animation tend to sit in front of the cam for miming/body movement. The tracker then translates the real-person data and applie it to the virtual character.

Not necessarily. I spent years trying to “work on my craft,” and the hard truth I learned was that I have a super limited range. I can sound OK in that range, but as soon as I butt up against the limits, I’m sounding flat. Any further and I’m unable to do it or going to a falsetto that sounds like Barry Gibb on helium.Bombadil wrote: Wed May 10, 2023 11:24 am All the wannabees who don't want to work on their craft will have a field day. So, what if I could get Freddy Mercury to sing my song for me? Would that be any different than me finding a singer to work with? The last time I tried that, the singer showed up late, had not spent a moment learning the song (that she had for months), and had a cold. After hours I got a bunch of passible takes that I could splice together to make a decent vocal track. It was for a commercial so I had asked her in advance to sign a simple boiler plate agreement to relinquish her rights for performance copyrights. She refused without reading it. Fine. She wouldn’t read it, so she took it home. Weeks went by. She’d already been paid, but every time I asked for it, she made some lame excuse. I finally invited her to lunch to pick up the document, paid for lunch, chatted with her while she ate her lunch, and was dumbfounded to watch her tell me at the end that she hadn’t signed the document and didn’t bring it.
I demanded the payment back and the cost of the lunch and that was that. I have no idea what was going on with her, but it screwed me over because I missed a month of possible Christmas season sales. I found a friend who ended up doing it for free, but it wasn’t that great. So to me, AI is just a way to avoid that whole scenario. I personally don’t care if it sounds like Freddy Mercury (though that would be awesome) or Drake, or anyone really. If it could “learn” my voice and extend its range, I’d be happy with that. It’s super frustrating to write a melody in my head and find out that it extends out of my range on both sides. I, for one, welcome our robot overlords.

Oh, I just thought of a great use for this technology. Imagine Yellow Submarine with something that actually sounded like The Beatles doing the dialog. I can’t wait.
