Oh, and for anyone who actually falls for the blatant strawman argument being made there, please educate yourself on the reality of the 'deliberately sounding like someone else' scenario as it has existed for decades...

Or sounding like no one. My daughter’s getting into music, and like all 10 year olds, it’s not great, and she listens to a lot of Taylor Swift, and I swear that every time I hear one of her songs that I don’t know, I say, “who’s this?” Even my daughter doesn’t recognize her. Her voice is so generic and characterless that I’m sure she could have an AI easily model it and stay home and let the AI handle things while she stays home.whyterabbyt wrote: Fri May 12, 2023 10:10 am Oh, and for anyone who actually falls for the blatant strawman argument being made there, please educate yourself on the reality of the 'deliberately sounding like someone else' scenario as it has existed for decades...

I doubt it will effect live music that much, as much as there is live music. I don’t think anyone will want to watch a laptop sing.

You can do it with the T‑Pain effect that iZotope used to sell. Maybe you can get a 2nd hand copy somewhere?osiris wrote: Fri May 12, 2023 1:37 pm How do you do the 'Cher effect'? - (flashback thread query courtesy O)
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Her producers lied at the time and said it was a DigiTech Whammy pedal, though, to keep it a secret.

"In the old days everything was so much better"
B4 electrified, amplified instruments, b4 itb, b4 autotune...
Always the same. Art is not static.
Even live performances might be replaced by holograms.
Does it make me happy?
I don't care, I don't belong to the young
generation any more!
Isn't it even a kind of recognition, when you will still hear the voice of Ray Charles in productions of 2050 and later?

They already litigated this in 199
https://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/view ... text=jatip
'The rights of both living and deceased celebrities may also be
protected under trademark law if some aspect of the celebrity's
identity is used as an identifier of goods or services. A trademark
is defined as any "word, name, symbol, or device, or any
combination thereof. . . used by a person . ..to identify and
distinguish his or her goods, including a unique product, from
those manufactured or sold by others and to indicate the source of
the goods, even if that source is unknown."" Since the
requirement for trademark protection is that the celebrity's identity
be used to identify goods or services, there is no distinction
between the trademark protection of living and deceased
celebrities. Unlike copyrights or rights of publicity, there is no
arbitrary limitation on the duration of the rights. Trademark rights
endure as long as the marks are being used.'
Now, this was about CGI recreations, but couldn't you apply it to singing?

It’s interesting to me, because sometimes I hear people talking and when separated from their image, I’d swear it was someone else. The first time I remember thinking this was in college. I had a professor who left the lecture hall with his wireless mic and kept on lecturing as he tested the limits of the wireless technology. Quickly I realized that he sounded nearly identical to Steven Martin.

What about Greta Van Fleet? Their singer sounds so much like Robert Plant. Could Plant win a lawsuit against Greta Van Fleet's lead singer? But shouldn't someone who sounds much like another singer still be allowed to make music? Should they be muted? Still, AI mimicking is a different scenario, but I'm not so sure you can copyright (or patent or whatever) a voice.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

yes. in fact, once one person sang, they should own the rights to singing!Dirtgrain wrote: Sat May 13, 2023 4:04 pm What about Greta Van Fleet? Their singer sounds so much like Robert Plant. too many singers these days, same with any instrument. there should be one de facto player allowed.

This would be a genius way of forcing new instruments to be discovered.. until every instrument is almost a cloned copy of the next one.. and then around we go again.vurt wrote: Sat May 13, 2023 4:13 pmyes. in fact, once one person sang, they should own the rights to singing!Dirtgrain wrote: Sat May 13, 2023 4:04 pm What about Greta Van Fleet? I seem to remember an ad they did and used someone famous CGI, John Wayne for Coors Lite (or whatever) and it caused quite a stir. People really didn't like it.
