Even now it’s lots of fun to play around with them in Live — there are far more available than just two of them, as someone falsely claimed before —, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them in the future.
Mark my words here, everything points towards AUv3 replacing AUv2, and when it does completely it will be harder for plug in developers to keep them off iOS than on.

The bridging plug in versions for VST aren't that great of Model-15 (kinda buggy here) but that points to some version of VST being able to handle this transition as well, obviously not as integrated into the ecosystem as AU for sure.

European Laws are going to make a stop to that, you know...
"side loading" stuff will become the norm either Apple likes it or not. They will have to offer a way to do it

I believe it's too big a market to stop selling to.

Probably (although smaller now without the UK) but there comes a point where Apple may not want their company policies and design decisions being dictated by the EU….one for another thread!

Side-loading may be offered, but it likely won't become the norm. Many people will want to stay in the walled garden, and that's ok.

Yeah, without a doubt, AUv3 is the future. But I’m pretty sure it will be a bumpy and years-long process until the transition is complete. Developers will have their work cut out for them, and I’m not even talking about the technical stuff. All these open questions about sustainable business models, distribution, support and so on will cause a lot of headaches, I suppose.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple had Logic for iPad ready to go a while ago, but held off to give the market some breathing space. But only just.

I know I will. And I live in the EU  I don't need anything anything side-loading can offer. I prefer the secure walled garden Apple offers on my phone
I also don't need/want everything to be USB-C. I'm perfectly fine with lightning. But the EU tells apple to do it, they must conform. Now I can throw away all my lightning cables I have accumulated. So much for ECO-friendly stand

I think Apples plan is to wireless charging and data as soon as the tech allows....plugging things in for any reason is so dated!

Yup- My phone, watch and earpods all live on a triple charging stand on my bedside table...but my iPad still plugs in to charge. Midi over BT also very good, but not sure how they will deal with getting real-time multitrack audio out without plugging something in - can be done on Wifi obviously (wireless guitar and wireless headphones can be done- I have some Boss waza-Air and the latency is very low)

AU moving to v3 doesn't mean Mac developers are going to be porting their plugins to iOS. It would still be a major amount of work for a dubious return.

Same for me... the most important feature for me on my iPhone is security. The second most important feature for me is security. In fact, that is all that matters to me and if Apple is forced to offer side loading, I would like them to make an option to prevent any connection with side loaded iPhones.
