Newbie confusion here. Are the VCAs in the QARV standalone, by which I mean can you modulate the output with an external source such as an envelope. There is no CV control of the “out” knob so am I correct in thinking you can only use the internal envelopes?

there's a vca input, which im assuming anything you put here will shape the amplitude. is this what you mean?

that does seem to pack a lot in!

OK thanks. Think I have it. Was getting confused between the inputs labelled VCA, IN, TRIG and IN/TRIG.
So if put an audio signal in the VCA input and an envelope through the IN input and set the internal attack and release to zero, the OUT pot will control the gain on the modulated audio signal. Will the SHAPE pot have any effect? Can’t find a manual on the After Late site.

My guess is it will flip the way the attack hits between exponential long attack, linear and exponential short attack. That’s what similar pots on that Behringer Four Play VCA does.SHall1000 wrote: Sun May 14, 2023 9:14 pm OK thanks. Think I have it. I m looking into a comprehensive sequencer.
I like Pam's. It s nice to sequence drums with the euclidian mode and you can also have a random cv and lock that into a melody. But you can t edit that melody, so you are missing out on control.
I m looking for a sequencer that gives me full control to mainly sequence melodies/harmonies.
Minimal requirements:
* more than 8 steps per sequence
* at least 2 independent tracks of varying size
* quantisation
* hand on control; i don t quite like when you have to select a step than set it, then move on to the next step, select it, set it. I d like to wiggle around with knobs of a decent size for fast control.
More features:
I ll take anything i can get. Polymeter, polyrythm, ratchets, probability, modulation lane, randomiser, different modes (forward, backward, pingpong, revert (skip one step, then bounce back)),...
Erica synths black sequencer seems to tick all the boxes. It has so many features and the controls make a lot of sense. With the 16 rotary controls of good size, you have immediate control.
But i d like a second opinion or maybe someone can point to a hidden gem somewhere.
I looked at a few other sequencers. I see Metropolix mentioned often. But i was surprised to see that the Metropolix is based only around 8 steps of notes and that is it. I wasn t impressed really. On the other hand, a google top page regarding modular sequencers didn t even feature the black sequencer???
The black sequencer IS big though and with the Spectraphon coming in, my rack is pretty much full already.
Alternatives that caught my attention too but don 't quite meet my specs.
SQ-1 : lots of possibilities for a little box but the knobs are a bit fiddly. Doesn t eat up rack space though and a great bang for the buck.
uO_c: several nice sequencers that will give me control but the hands on control isn t there. More like select step, set step, select step, set step.

Still 60hp to fill but I intend to take my time.

Have you considered the SQ 64? Doesn’t meet your knob control per step requirement but I find it quick to work with. Pitch, gate and mod CV out on all four tracks (also 2 midi out connections) up to 64 steps with lots of recallable patterns. Small and relatively cheap for the power on offer.Stefken wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 7:02 pm Alternatives that caught my attention too but don 't quite meet my specs.

I’m not a good one to ask so I’ll refrain making any suggestions, but have you seen this video?Stefken wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 7:02 pm I m looking into a comprehensive sequencer.

I think a sequencer is in my future, but likely next year.

I’ve got a Westlicht Performer which is amazingly powerful for the HP, but you only get to control one step’s pitch at a time.
What about looking at the Varigate 8+, think it covers all your bases?

the only 16 step with knobs i own is rene, which is big so refrained from suggesting
i also have the malekko sequencer, which has a lot of what you are after, but isn't as hands on with the push a button to choose step, and then the slider for whichever output...

Big isn t necessarily bad. If the module is worth it...vurt wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 11:04 pm the only 16 step with knobs i own is rene, which is big so refrained from suggesting
I won t be going for the Rene though, as it falls more in the quirky unpredictable sort.
