Hello, using the stock limiter it seems there is some side chaining going on I don't quite understand it but it's sucking up the other tracks.

Is it what the linking does?

I am new to this Daw and am a bit behind on all the features doing my best to catch up.

Any one has feedback about the limiter please?

Ah...please take a look here:

There's hardly someone who explains it better (imho). He's actually one of the best resources when it comes to Reaper.

Cheers

It's just a very pumpy limiter, even with the release all the way down. Not a fan, personally.

You could also try the included JS hard limiter.

"I mean, if it works it works, but this really is about the harshest, nastiest possible way to do it. It's called a "limiter",...it's actually just a hard clipper."

Reaper is amazing, but you can def do better than the stock plugins, even looking at free plugins. If you want a great free, transparent limiter -> https://loudmax.blogspot.com if you want a great, free colored limiter -> https://d16.pl/frontier

Thanks guys for the clarifications. I will give it more time but might need a separate and free compressor and limiter. I will look at the above recommendations.

If you’re looking for more than just a limiter, Reaper has its own plugin format called JSFX and there are loads of free JSFX plugins. Never tried these but a lot of people recommend them:

Some of the Reaper Rea plugins are very good but I'm with those who feel there are much better free options for limiting than ReaLimit. It's threshold is puzzlingly hard to set where I want it and the results, based on the visual, don't appeal to me. I stopped trying and just pull out another Toneboosters Barricade and in 5 seconds it's responding perfectly and sounding fine.

I think it may be something like ReaCompX (a multi band dynamics plugin that I similarly can't get to do in ten minutes what I can easily do it 15 seconds in other multiband dynamics plugins) where there's something about it that the devs didn't get right. I'm glad that they both exist but they're proof that Reaper isn't perfect or infallible.

The problem there is the crossovers. They used a 12 dB/oct low-pass (with resonance for some reason), but then incorrectly constructed the high-pass as HP=DRY-(minus)-LP. That gives you a 6 dB/oct filter with resonance. Just...no. Unusable.

Otherwise ReaXComp is very close to ReaComp.

That's unfortunately true. Reaper itself is great, but the plugins, whether made by Cockos or the bundled JS's made by others, tend to have many DSP issues.

ReaLimit doesn't necessarily have "issues", it's just designed to be very soft and pumpy, as opposed to a more distorting limiter, which tends to sound better imo.
