Decent paying job, no kids, cars are paid off, college debt is paid off, mortgage is cheap and will be paid off in less than a year. No other debt or expensive hobbies. Lost our habit of going out much since the pandemic. (On the other hand, I probably will never be able to retire because of medical insurance, but AI and ageism are probably going to screw my career over eventually.)

In 2023 I sold $61 more in gear than I spent... until now. But having Spectraphon is likely to mean I'm going to sell off other things and my total gear spending for the year still won't be much.

Much like Foosnark, I’m going to end up spending less than what I’ve sold. I’m still going through things to downsize.

Also, same here not going out as much, cost of living was always high here and it’s gone up a little compared to before, but more like everywhere else is getting closer to what we’ve been paying.

I’m also indulging after this mental/anxiety/panic disorder bullshit popped up in my life. Lost a good two and half months and focusing on how I want to work with sound has been one of the greatest positive influences in being able to feel normal again.

Life is weird

Maybe if I actually sold stuff, I have never sold any of the HW I bought. In Hawaii, it's difficult because of the shipping and whatnot. At least I have always thought so. I guess I am to the point where I have plenty of stuff... well except for furniture to put my stuff on. I have bought a nice desk, and will buy another soon. So I have some place to put my gear.

*Its cool that it still makes you guys happy tho, these days stuff like that can be hard to find for
many.

Stefken wrote: Mon May 15, 2023 2:15 pm I am not grasping yet how spectral analysis relates to traditional sampling.
If you would clock the analysis, and you would input some classic waveshapes in a structured way, into the 1024 possible spectra snapshots, what would be the result.
E.g. if you input a supersaw, would it not try to represent that supersaw as closely as possible by generating a ton of sine waves? And if you scan through that array of classic waveshape snapshots, you could use it somewhat as a wavetable osc.
Using SAO mode is gonna be a lot like using a wavetable osc, but easier in some ways.

When capturing a wavetable, the period of a cycle of the input has to exactly match the length of a single cycle in the wavetable bank, or the mismatch will screw up the timbre. (Theoretically, if you modulated the wavetable index at exactly the right rate relative to the oscillator frequency you could get away with the mismatch, but at that point it's just acting like a pointlessly complicated sampler.)

For spectral captures, you don't have to worry about alignment. But I'm very curious how well it will capture something tricky like a supersaw -- at any rate it should be pretty interesting as long as you modulate Slide/Focus while playing back.
What might be interesting too is have it sample a plaits, where you consistently switch the model with a random cv. Might result in some interesting arrays. Well, any macro oscillator will do.

Or use a switch to have the input switch between different oscillators. .

Pretty much the same thing here. Decent job, mortgage is paid, no kids, no cars. Selective on restaurants etc as prices has gone up a lot. The absence of a car alone already pays for this hobby and i have few other expenses that i indulge.
And also on the HW front i d like to keep it real.

But being a big vocoder and spectrum fan, this thing is pretty interesting. Dual vocoder, dual osc or mixed. Even one Behringer vocoder instance is over 500 euro. This thing has two and is almost a complete instrument in itself. I wish they did a bit more with the Buchla 259 interopability of the oscs as it only provides FM modulation. Maybe an update could provide more there, as this thing is completely digital (but i don 't know if Make Noise does that kind of thing; they don 't come across as a U-he)

Still... i have not taken the plunge just yet. It s still under evaluation and I ll be interested to see what the response is of the early adopters.

Tomorrow morning @9AM, the James Cigler's walk-through, and Cinematic Lab's walk-through @11 AM, should give you a much broader picture of its functions/potential and whether or not it would appeal to your particular needs/style/aspirations, etc., based on what it offers, rather than focusing on what it lacks.

I had the realization that the mention of the Buchla Touche and 296 is a bigger clue than I thought.

Instead of dozens/hundreds of sine oscillators, the Touche used Chebyshev polynomials to multiply the frequency of a single sine to create harmonics. These only work with integer ratios, so you don't get inharmonic partials.

Which means on the analysis side, all it needs to know about are the harmonics, not all frequency bins in a range. You set the fundamental frequency with Slide, and a bunch of bandpass filters and envelope followers (just like the 296) determine the levels of the harmonics -- no need for FFT. So that's why latency is low.

I think what this means is, with a supersaw, if you matched Slide to the input fundamental, you'd get approximately a plain saw out -- but the levels of the different harmonics would wobble a bit over time. Ditto for pink noise but there'd be a lot more wobbling.

Should be pretty interesting to use clangy, frequency shifted input and then impose order on it with Spectraphon...

One of the annoyances of Xaoc Odessa is that the main outputs also both include the fundamental, and sometimes you really don't want that -- and because they have automatic gain control, you can't easily mix the fundamental output at opposite phase to cancel it out. I usually wind up using a notch filter in the DAW. I wonder what Spectraphon does there.

Yes, that will be interesting.
I m not focusing on what it lacks. Feeling a bit defensive?

I just notice aspects where they could improve and relate to the stuff they took inspiration from. I find it a bit strange to provide a bulky double size module (that forces people to rethink their complete case :help: ) but then only provide limited operation on the interoperability. I can see they used the 259 as an inspiration but why be content with only basic interoperability. If you are going that huge, then use it to the fullest.
( It has like 8 outputs, and a ton of functionality don t get me wrong. )

I'm really curious about being able to capture this for viewing in a spectrogram (RX-7/SpectraLayers-9), and seeing how it works. 8)

I’m excited for this even though I have no idea who James Cigler is.

Cinematic Lab's Video should be fun.
