I'm not a big-time gamer anymore these days, but I've had no problem whatsoever with using Steam on my Linux machines. I treat my systems as general purpose tools, rather than dedicating them to just audio. Everything that I've used on Steam worked fine.
Vendor‑Dependent Copy Protection: Customers lose. Pirates win.
(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

Hi, the Debian/MX-Linux based 'AVLinux' is a turnkey system, with wine, wineasio, yabridge, and Reaper demo installed and ready. For yabridge, give it path statements in a terminal, likefedexnman wrote: Thu May 11, 2023 8:10 pm Any of y'all gaming and doing music on the same machine ???? I'm thinking about doing an Amd 5600x n 6600xt build and skipping Windows 10/11 and try PopOS with steam ? And also try using Yabridge for windows VSTs .. I've used Ubuntu and other distros in the past and have had some luck with audio but NOT windows VSTs on Linux though .
yabridgectl add /home/you/.wine/drive_c/users/VstPlugins
yabridgectl add /home/you/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files/VstPlugins"
the same effort for each unique windows plugin path, then command
yabridgectl sync
(note the quotes around "Program Files" Anything with a space in it's title will need
to be wrapped when part of a terminal command, like
/home/you/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files/Native Instruments/VSTPlugins 64 bit"
cd /home/ciento222/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files/Common Files"
You can try the AVLinux as a live dvd, and apply what you like to a Ubuntu setup
download AVLinux at www.bandshed.net

For a little bit of time, I was using Nobara and GloriousEggroll's Proton for Lutris/Steam. Gaming on Nobara is very streamlined, but I have never tested any audio programs then.fedexnman wrote: Thu May 11, 2023 8:10 pm Any of y'all gaming and doing music on the same machine ???? I have since ceased using proprietary software. It is over now.

I've had issues lately with Debian linux and the gpg keys needed for the spotify-client...too much hassle trying to get them in agreement, so a google search led to a reddit topic that recommended using the flatpak spotify app, and sure enough, it worked out of the box. I pay the small fee for the premium Spotify, one of the great entertainment

I mostly listen to Internet radio stations now. No advertisements, trackers, analytics or subscriptions, ever. Occasionally I listen to the local files on my smartphone when I am off-grid. I live a DRM-free lifestyle.glokraw wrote: Wed May 17, 2023 9:10 am I've had issues lately with Debian linux and the gpg keys needed for the spotify-client...too much hassle trying to get them in agreement, so a google search led to a reddit topic that recommended using the flatpak spotify app, and sure enough, it worked out of the box. Also Tracktion Waveform is multi-platform !tony10000 wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 5:38 pm Given the trajectory of MacOS and now Windows, I wonder when more DAWs, virtual instruments, and effects are going to make the transition to Linux compatibility? DAWs like Bitwig and Reaper are already multi-platform options.

Another nice cross-platform daw is the Harrison Mixbus. Almost 2 years since Tony's question, and it seems to me that young people coming out of schools are happy enough to keep using the mac/win OS systems they used in their learning years, at least until some calamity or fiscal reality occurs, leading to considering alternatives.
There are many excellent native linux tools, enough to keep someone used to productivity, very busy, and that demonstrate linux/mac/win build-systems and porting are possible. Wine, with the yabridge and linvst plugin wrappers, allow a high percentage of windows plugins to be useful, and the AVLinux turnkey MX-debian based distro has the tricky or vague parts pre-assembled, so very little actual linux savvy is needed to start recording. Mostly just the paths and config settings that all computers require, and a dozen or so odd buzzwords
An extremely efficient and sensible-in-use linux video editor seems to be one thing lacking for media production beyond the basics of music production. Maybe this summer I can spend a few dozen hours with byte-sized tutorials, getting up to speed. Hopefully without needing
a used Mac

Late breaking semi-protip: save some typing and use Midnight Commander to arrow your way into the directories, and then you can just switch to the terminal with Ctrl-O and doglokraw wrote: Thu May 11, 2023 10:04 pmFor yabridge, give it path statements in a terminal, like

IMo the company starting with spo** misused their role as marked leader as they fall down in my appreciation for their mafious behaviour. As an artist, if you ask me, they did not come up with any penny they put in their own pocket instead of distributing between the guys who did the job. It is a sad story, if you ask me I still love internet radio, as it still has this surprising moments, sp** cannot give you

Interesting! Do you have experience with Bitwig on Linux, as I am ok to pay money for their massively awesome product by the way for mac, I even saw it is aware for the so called CLAP plugins. Are you guys having experience here?glokraw wrote: Mon Jun 12, 2023 5:52 am Another nice cross-platform daw is the Harrison Mixbus. SRy, back again one more time, but here in your example it should be mentioned, that vstplugin folder often times means 3rd party fun. That means for you all out there, if what ever you have funky stuff in your vstplugin folder, lets say the more you have, the more trouble you will get into, as I never tried out this instruction, but I can def tell you trouble will come with commercial plugins and or plugins, which are simply not supported about hardware issues or too complex.glokraw wrote: Thu May 11, 2023 10:04 pmHi, the Debian/MX-Linux based 'AVLinux' is a turnkey system, with wine, wineasio, yabridge, and Reaper demo installed and ready. Hi, I have a Bitwig 8-Track license for linux, that I use for effects chains sometimes. Drag-N-drop, and some very good effects. I might get the 16 Track version if they have a no-brainer sale. (but they have brains, so could be a long wait
) I think Reaper is a little better at scanning windows plugins that are wrapped by linvst or yabridge.
I'm blessed with a large collection of windows plugins, that are wrapped by yabridge, and they work well in the linux Reaper, and the windows Reaper running in wine-staging also works very well, and as long as I don't upgrade a fully working system 'just because it's possible', I can keep making music. I Have the wine-staging 6.22 that comes with AVLinux distro, and a V5 of yabridge plugin wrapper.
There are a few big-name plugin companies with weird registration schemes and wild-eyed product managers that won't (yet) work, but I'll try a new wine-staging on a spare drive this summer, (with Bodhi linux), as wine is up to V8.something, but remaining in 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mode, so I'll stick with companies using sensible serial-number registration until some breakthrough is discovered.
Cheers

Been super busy, but getting caught up...what's new to me? While falkTX As well is maintaining the Carla daw,
https://github.com/falkTX/Carla
he has also been slaving away at the the Cardinal modular synth/fx system, creating new features and alternatives not present in the VCVrack modular. His news page has many details:

Tramp, the Guitarix dev, has likewise been coding at a prolific pace, continuing the vst3 version Guitarix, the many lv2 plugins, and some great coding utility software:

The LSP collection gets a major update:

I put together an album of 35 songs at Bandcamp, for people struggling with the aftermath of tradgedies, of which so many are ongoing. Hopefully the music will be calming, and people can find some diversion to help them deal with the effects from their particular situations. I set it up for the album and individual songs to be free, and listeners are encouraged to donate to known reputable charities, or directly to someone in need...it's never hard to find someone these days.
https://franklincheney.bandcamp.com/alb ... same-again
In the process, I discovered there is an add-on for firefox that puts a volume slider on the Bandcamp player page, very handy!
