Pere Ubu - love 'em

was thinking about the music cafe winter contest and why i make music etc and realised how important they are to me. don't hear people talking about them much, i know they're not the usual 'electronic' fodder but i love them - one of my greatest inspirations in making music. i also love david thomas's solo work - like nothing else it's beautifully unhinged and truly liberating.

anyone else know what i'm on about?

Hear hear. What's not to love?

Pere Ubu went through a lot of different phases, all of them good. I first heard them in the 80s, when Cloudland came out (I know, bit late to the game). When I later heard their early stuff I was shocked at the sort of crazed punk version of Beefheart that they did.

From skronk to sea shanties, and all excellent stuff. That's pretty impressive in my book.

Dub Housing is one of my favorite records ever. Dave Thomas's solo stuff as the Pedestrians is too.

i got to see them live a couple of times after they 'reformed' in the mid-80s

also saw david thomas and the two pale boys live in a little arts centre about 10? years ago.

Damn, I love early Pere Ubu. Also, don't forget about Rocket from the Tombs, the source of both Pere Ubu, AND The Dead Boys. Ain't it Fun? is truly worth hearing in it's original ultra-depressing lo-fi goodness. None of the covers ever could capture the desperation of the original.

30 Seconds Over Tokyo is cool and I didn't mind some of their late 80's/early 90's work but they never really did all that much for me.
