hi!

maybe a very stupid question but i didnt much check my songs in mono mode and there was a very interesting video i saw where someone mentioned as for mono-compatibility to listen to EACH track in PURE MONO mode. do you do this? (just setting the Master as mono?) and then listen if you hear any phase or is there maybe some effect/tool which can analyze the track(s)?

thx

That's what I do. FL has a stereo width knob on the master. You can either widen it or make it mono. You'd be surprised what disappears in mono. It also helps me know certain sounds are way too much in the mix.

thx osiris, you mean this knob`just all the way up to the righ on master do you?

if someone know or /osiris

a) if in mono mode some sound is louder than in stereo mode do you lower the volume or maybe M/S EQ this specific sound so it sounds in mono also well rounded? is this a rule that in mono mode there should be all sounds not overtoning others?

b) if in mono mode no phasing is heard then all should be well shouldnt it? for phasing/mono compatibility check

thx again a lot! i need to add these points to my checklist.

Yes that's it. You may hear some sounds are much louder in mono and some some sounds disappear. (That's phasing issues.) This helped me tame a too loud pad and you can get a better idea how things are sitting in the mix.

thx a lot! i just had one song where the clap (which i distorted and layered) was in sterep kinda ok maybe slightly had to be turned down but in mono it dominated too much, so im now fiddling around so it sounds in mono not dominating.

great tip!

Just turn master mono. Mixing tip here, start mixing in mono and with volume only first :) as @osiris said too it'll help

It's a big help. Just don't forget to turn it back to normal field. I did that once. Couldn't figure out why things sounded so dull and I'd forgot to put field back in stereo.

I use ISOL8 to not only solo in mono, but solo the low end (80-100hz and below) too... you can hear how much sub is in the sides vs mono.

That advice to set your overall fader levels/balance with the full mix in mono... has some merit but is not essential.

It helps especially in the beginning of the mix and if one is a beginner. It is not essential, but a one trick in toolbox. Like going through the tracks while the tune is playing, muteing them one by one to search for the problem sound/area. Helps, not essential.

Basslane Pro can also do this and I love how you can set the Hz and it will solo everything below that. (Or everything it's processing, I think)

Monofilter looks very nice. Lots more parameters.

I always listen through in mono as it is very good for identifying issues in phase or volume. I personally also find I seem to make better panning decisions in mono as well but I don't understand why that may be.

Just as osiris says make sure you return it to stereo before exporting as I have also made that mistake before.
