hey guys, i recently talked to a friend of mine who works for an APP Company for smartphones and he said their company pays musicians if needed with a per minute contract. it sounded interesting and i wanted to send some music to them out of fun (why not lol) but he said it is as i said per minute payment and you HAVE TO SELL the rights. which made me very sceptical.

so in the end as far as i understand you sell e.g. 5 minutes of music, say $50 for a minute and get a payment of $250 and thats it? so you of course sell the rights, but do they still have to mention your name/artist name? and can you still get royalty fees? i mean what happens when they sell an app which becomes suddenly very succesful? this would be heavy to just have sold the 5 minutes of music for $250 and not even get royalty fees then... or even get mentioned.

does anyone got any infos/experiences? :tu:

20 years ago 1 minute of music for an ad could get you about a grand.
No idea what it is these days ...

How much time does it take to create it? Your hourly salary? Multiply those...

If you sold all rights, it is not yours any more.
No credits, no royalties. You sold all that.

No, it is work-for-hire. Pure work, no credits or royalties. You trade building a brand for financial stability.

oh man, this sounds bad in my opinion then? i mean e.g.
you make a 3 minute track and say hey i take 500 bucks, and then you get it and you dont get any credits later and you are a nobody then.... for quick cash maybe ok but to make a name i guess not a good way...

OTOH, if the project tanks, you've made $500 for nothing. What's wrong, exactly, with being a "nobody"? A quarter-of-a-million people see my work every day but they have no idea who made it. So what? I'd rather earn a decent living than be famous, thanks.

This sounds scammy. If they hit with a 'Candy Crush' type success you'll feel like you screwed it up. But like Bones said, if not you've made $500. Do you even know the app?

It ain't no scam, just a contract. You get paid a fixed amount in return for everything including risk of taking the hit when it goes pear-shaped south.
Enough? That depends...

I don’t know how much a minute of music costs, but I charge my employer $50 an hour to make it.

That's a pretty good article. Lessons learned: NEVER do it for free.
'Indie game music composers with experience and a credit list, will have prices within the range of $250-$1000 per minute of music.'

And finally:
; In most cases, I’ve decided to charge for my time like any other contractor / freelancer (per hour of work).…Rather than charging per minute of music. The downside of charging per minute of produced music is that if the client requests several revisions. Which means more production time without any additional payment. You will probably go minus on such project.'

Good advice. When my clients know I’m on the clock, they’re a lot less eager to make silly requests. I also make sure that most of my instruments are software or able to be controlled via a plugin, so when the requests come, it usually isn’t a big problem to change it.

It is something that you need to thoroughly evaluate before doing. I could see the reason behind this if someone simply doesn't know where to get exposure.

IMO if you get "hired" to write music you might be less inclined to put in your best effort, you are getting paid regardless. I have seen this happen many times before..
