The discussion is interesting but I think we are sliding off topic mate....
A funny point with Samsung is that for TV they bet on QLED when they were in a almost Monopoly and lost everything to LG who did the right choice to go to OLED...

I'm sure people have plenty of reasons (outlined already variously) for using macs, and that's all fine. What they can't do is blatantly spout spurious arse about performance, given the thousands of tests;

facts!

and bloody surprising too.
i may cancel my order from the apple store now based on this.

Well, there was a period when Apple brought out the M1 when it was beating Intel and AMD in terms of pure performance for 'affordable' CPUs. What people neglect is that since then there have been new generations of chips and they've been leapfrogged again.

i just didn't expect the first showing for a mac to be so far down.

i would say we have got to a point, whichever platform, where the computer is going to be powerful enough to do most things, most of us will be doing at home.

but it is fun watching the war.

Indeed, there's already a lot of refurbished stuff coming on ebay etc. Given that I never need the top whizz bang bonkers CPUs for working with mostly audio and a few sample libraries, then it's all good for me when I do finally get round to buying something newer. :love:

The Yarkshur lineage coming through again...

The one thing to be aware of, specifically for laptops, is performance (with higher CPU loads) tends to be throttled heavily on Windows laptops (and Intel Macs) once unplugged from wall power - unless you want literal minutes of battery life. So, unless someone always uses their laptop plugged in, look for sustained performance numbers when unplugged. Resources, such as basic benchmarks, tend not to communicate this information. In those scenarios the Apple devices will tend to fair significantly better..

For desktops, Apple's current products are all smaller form factors, and their current top end M1 Ultra is around Intel 12900 performance. The Mac Pro desktop (which isn't small form factor) hasn't been launched. It should change the desktop situation somewhat. Or, at least, it should for the price they'll likely try to charge. :)

I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago, namely;

The qualifier is there, and quite deliberately so on my part.

Not so... If you click on the CPUs faster than the m2 pro... you see one interesting thing:
Typical TDP: 55 W
TDP Down: 45 W
TDP Up: 157 W

I am not expert but I would think that the max performance is attain with ... the max TDP no ?
meaning 157W...
If it is the case, 157W means you can't do that on battery and your computer will be freaking hot...

My real life experience is that as soon as you have a decent project, your cpu will work hard. Hard enough to toggle the high perf... And become a toaster...

EDIT: Just googled M2 Pro TDP... It is 28W and no max (no "turbo" mode). Meaning he can do this all day...

i don't think it does to me.
i have no desire, to do anything on a computer outside. tbh, i have little desire to be outside, ever. or to use a computer at all, it's a fancy tape recorder is all :shrug:

..and that may factor into your decision, as I previously stated. My point, very narrowly, was that in terms of pure performance the argument cannot be made that the apple CPUs now are superior, as some were insistent upon.

I'll leave you lads to discuss these ancillary matters now at your leisure. Got some music to do on my i7-3740qm craptop, with turbo boost turned off, not going above 70% on the FL cpu meter. :hihi:
