Why not establish our own benchmark system using a couple standard cross-platform DAWs and set of VST3 plugins?
Comparisons would need to be DAW specific with uniform samplerate, audio buffer size/priority/drop out settings, internal processing precision, and available RAM. System noise level should also be noted in the tests.
Members could test the number of plugin instances for a particular DAW template on their own systems, and record the results.
This is the only way we are going to have a meaningful analysis and discussion that’s relevant to our interests as musicians and audio producers.

Ok, based on your feedback, I will try harder.

Requires a tool. Totally undermines the portability but it gets the job done.

This is a rational request, but here's the gist, we don't need the fastest machine ever to do what we do. My modded 12 core 3.33Ghz Xeon Mac pro from 09 until very recently could run even the most CPU hungry patches. I rarely if ever ran out of CPU resources with it. Now the M1 Air here is plenty for more than 99% of what I do. I'm actually going in the opposite direction, on pre order for the Push 3 stand alone. A lowly 4 core i5, but only doing one task, running Live.jamcat wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 2:57 pm Why not establish our own benchmark system using a couple standard cross-platform DAWs and set of VST3 plugins?

This is KVR though, there will always be someone comparing whatever the latest monstrosity is to whatever Apple announce, because the straw man is always that apple or someone claimed that M1 is better than anything by Intel etc. then the replies are like we've seen, a bunch of people claiming they aren't even competitive. Claiming specific DAW tests don't count, making a shit show of the thread etc. etc.

I don't understand you guys, why can't you just enjoy the latest tech and computers, regardless of the architecture or the platform? Why do you have to argue like that I could never genuinely understand this. Both platforms (OS) and the architectures seem to be different enough to please or cover the vast majority of the people and make them satisfied with their tools.
Why can't you just get along?

Not if you want to measure and compare the overall performance of processors.

No. If you only take the single example of Kontakt, you know how Kontakt perfoms on the M2 Ultra, nothing else. Software may or may not be optimized for certain CPU extensions. Or, in general, optimized for certain processors, or architectures. It's totally pointless to take a single plugin, and take it as a benchmark for a CPU.PAK wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 8:31 am What those single results expose is that Cinebench doesn't provide a meaningful metric for audio use because it's not testing those apps, and the apps it is testing tend to work differently. Kontakt is merely one prominent app which demonstrates the picture is more complex than some might like to paint.
The whole counts, not just a single use case, or, much worse, a single plugin.

Even if the new Apple is faster, soon(2023 Intel/2024 AMD) there will be faster chips.
Current AMD 7000 and Intel(Z790) users can upgrade just by changing the CPU!
Try that with Apple...
The "legend" says AMD Ryzen 8000 will be +- 30% faster!! It is a lot!!!
I lets hope it is true...
