On the UVI & D-50 chat, the DS-90s is 'inspired by' the D-50, but unsure of how useful it'd be without the D-50 samples

Yes, won't happen because of copyright, agreed.mmccarthy wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 9:32 amUnlikely to happen as the samples will be under copyright. I definitely recall finding a D-50 sample pack that was taken down due to Roland threatening legal action on that basis.
Only real options are either the Roland Cloud version or the D-05 Boutique. I was after some D-50 sounds and ended up just picking up an MC-101 as it had enough of the D-50 sounds I was after (I wasn't planning on actually playing around with the D-50 controls so not missing out there).
Shame, as there are some wonderful sounds there but I absolutely despise Roland Cloud.
Omnisphere has a fair few licensed D-50 soundsources and has recreated most of the famous presets using them, and also taken them in different directions. Not a full D-50 obvs, but helps scratch the occasional itch if you need THAT sound, and offers limitless editing.

What an amazing update for the Micro. I hope (and kind of expect) those features to trickle up to the Minifreak.

A while back I read someone from Arturia mention that the V in V Collection stands for Virtual, not Vintage, so they could put just about anything into the collection.

If you want the real deal, there is always the D-550 rack. You can probably pick up one of those for less than the price of a silly, practically uneditable D-05 Boutique.mmccarthy wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 9:32 amUnlikely to happen as the samples will be under copyright. I still have my D-550 that I bought in the late 80s. That thing is built like a tank. I did replace the display about 10 years ago because it was getting a little dim. But other than that, it's been trouble-free and is in mint condition. The presets are of course really dated. But it's a very unique sounding synth, especially the digital filter resonance.

Unfortunately, Waldorf's PPG 3.V plugin sounds almost nothing like an actual PPG 2.3. The wavetables sound super thin and weak and the digital filter sounds horrible compared to the classic SSM 2044 analog filter in the hardware instrument.
So if Arturia could improve upon the PPG 3.V (which shouldn't be that difficult,) that might be a nice addition to V Collection 10. However, as a MicroWave I Rev A and MicroWave II XT owner, I would probably prefer an emulation of the XT. It's all digital so it should in theory be easier to emulate.
This is off topic. But if Groove Synthesis ever release a module version of their 3rd Wave hardware synthesizer, I would buy that in a heartbeat. It's the closest thing to a real PPG that is currently available.

I'm surprised Arturia haven't emulated the PPG already, makes me wonder if there isn't some issue with copyrite. I don't know how accurate the Waldorf's sound is, but I know it takes a lot of effort to create a good patch using that cramped GUI and poorly organised wavetable browser, I'm sure Arturia would improve on that.Ex Machina wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2023 1:42 amUnfortunately, Waldorf's PPG 3.V plugin sounds almost nothing like an actual PPG 2.3. I wonder who actually owns the rights to the PPG/Waldorf wavetables. Is it PPG's founder Wolfgang Palm or is it the "new" Waldorf that reemerged in the mid 2000s with the Blofeld?Zipede wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2023 7:22 am I'm surprised Arturia haven't emulated the PPG already, makes me wonder if there isn't some issue with copyrite. I'd be curious to learn whether Groove Synthesis had to license these wavetables for use in their 3rd Wave synthesizer.
Behringer is supposedly planning to release a PPG clone (and you know they'll just take whatever IP they want). But given their track record of over promising and WAY under delivering, who knows if this will ever see the light of day. Besides, the PPG 2.3 is a pain in the ass to program. So I don't think I would be interested in a 1 to 1 clone. I'd much rather have a 3rd Wave (that admittedly will cost at least four times as much as the proposed Behringer clone).

Not sure about the wavetables. But the PPG trademark is owned by Brainworx\plugin alliance.I wonder who actually owns the rights to the PPG/Waldorf wavetables. Is it PPG's founder Wolfgang Palm or is it the "new" Waldorf that reemerged in the mid 2000s with the Blofeld?
In 2020 Wolfgang Palm retired and the softsynths he made at that time under the PPG brand where sold to them. Current owners got coupons for when Brainworx would release new versions. The interview is still on the pa site:
Can you tell us about your collaboration with Plugin Alliance & Brainworx Audio?
Well, I am thrilled that I found Brainworx Audio & Plugin Alliance, who appreciate my work from the past and would like to continue my current software products.
I think they have a great team of competent developers, product specialists, marketing, and all that belongs to a successful company.
I support their work and to make the transition as smooth as possible. It will be exciting to see how this evolves.
Also, I think that this collaboration will find a much wider audience than before.
Dick Ulrich from Brainworx says “We are proud that Wolfgang Palm put his brand and product into our hands. We will make sure to carry his legacy with the respect it deserves and we are looking forward to evolving the brand and products for years to come.”
Nothing has been released since, the synths are no longer for sale.
Word has it that there will be no new development.
They are actively hunting use of the PPG brand by others though, so maybe the trademark was more interesting to them than the Palm synths.
Almost one knob per function. Yes, there are a few menu's that have short parameter names. But compared to most other synths from mid 80-ies onwards, it's very easy to program.Besides, the PPG 2.3 is a pain in the ass to program.
