I really like the sampler track in Cubase but it got one thing I cannot really deal with:

How do you step through a bunch of i.e. drum samples??

In S1 samplers I have some arrow tools going to the next/previous sample of the same folder...

Is there something similar for the Sampler Track or is it really just drag and drop (not interested in the Window 95 style internal file browser... 8) )?

Post

Use the Media Bay/File Browser window on the right side to browse/audition and drag and drop from there.

Cubase's sampler as far as I know can't do it. Reaper's RS5K can.

That´s what I meant with "...just drag and drop..."

That´s a pity... :(

welcome to Cubase, there's a lot of Windows 95 here :)

You can use Groove Agent (SE) for that.

Actually mentioned that in my original post but removed it cause I figured he wanted to do it the not so fun way with the Sampler Track heh.

For drums, ALWAYS use Groove Agent, it's like a mini-MPC in Cubase.

Yes I know the way in Grooveagent... I would have liked it just better in the Sampler Track though...

No worries...

I’m just curious. How is it done in GA SE? I haven’t been able to figure it out?

My problem with the sampler track in Cubase Pro 12 is that it simply chops up beats without extending the tails of individual slices. So if you play back the individual hits as a "drum kit," all of the samples sound really choppy with abrupt endings.

Propellerheads ReCycle uses a really archaic process whereby a user defined portion of the sample tail is reversed and faded in with the source slice in order to extend the slice tails. In this way, if you slow down the tempo of your REX file, you won't hear obvious choppy gaps between slices.

But the sound quality of this "tail extension" process is poor and really only works on drum loops as opposed to guitar loops, etc.

I sent an email to Steinberg suggesting that they provide the option of using their high quality time stretch algorithms to stretch the second half of each slice in a sampler track. This way the attack transients stay sharp and natural sounding whereas the tail of each sample is smoothly stretched to extend its length.

I never heard back unfortunately. But my idea would make the sampler track far more useful.

Sampler track is great but it is weird that it has no undo.

Recycle is about the only app that ever really did that, which is part of the reason it was so special. I still keep it around for the rare occasion I might want to chop something and send it to my EMU.

Groove Agent wont do it either, but one nice thing about starting and ending in GA is it wont chop up your wav file, so you can play with the ends of the hits a bit more. Starting off in Sampler Track, slicing up a track and then sending it to GA, will actually chop the wav into individual hits. You're stuck with that it gives you.

Drag/drop the drum loop into GA onto a single pad, and then when you set the slices from there, it remaps the sample/chops across the pads instead of cutting up the sample, like using an MPC with the 'Pad Parameters' option for drums.

As nobody has answered this question:

.
When you now select a sample in the side browser it gets autoloaded on the current Pad...

It´s a pity that it´s previewed in the browser too but at least you can step this way through multiple samples easily...

Ugh, prelisten in place is what I was missing. Thanks
