Some usb ports on my Asus prime are so close you can really use every other port. That's just not acceptable! :)

It's a niche, but for those who use it...

That only means that their existing code is lacking. AVX512 can't magically make things faster on a hardware that splits the instructions into 2 halves.

Unless you're a hardcore gamer who needs a portable rig for some reason, these gaming laptops are ridiculous. Not only are they hideously ugly and really, really tacky, they are also freaking huge. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them weigh close to 10 pounds. Who would buy something like this for music production? Just build a tasteful PC tower with proper thermals and a reasonably low noise floor.

The only PC laptops I would consider are the core i9 Asus Zenbook Pro 14 OLED and the core i9 Dell XPS 17 Touchscreen.

Dell: https://tinyurl.com/23gamwup

There's just one tiny little catch. The Zenbook model with 32GB of RAM and a 2TB NVMe SSD costs a whopping $3,750! The Dell is even more expensive at over $4,000. Those are Apple M2 Max MacBook Pro prices. Sure, the Zenbook and XPS 17 will significantly outperform the MacBook (especially in graphics performance). But I'd still go with the M2 Max MacBook Pro for less heat/noise, much longer battery life, an even better and brighter display, and a better selection of ports. I'd then wait for the 3 nanometer M3 version of the Mac Studio Ultra as my primary desktop music computer.

This just shows that Apple Silicon MacBooks are not overpriced for what you get.

Correction: They will outperform anything while plugged in.

The Asus seems interesting... Especially as it has an OLED display and I loooove OLED display.

But the problem is always the same:

Extract from "Stuff" magazine:

"
Either way, the built-in fans quickly pick up speed (and noise) when you run demanding tasks or play games. It’s dramatically loud, despite the abundance of air vents around the laptop’s rear and sides, so you’ll want to use headphones to drown it out. Simpler stuff like web browsing is whisper quiet, though.

You can charge the 76Wh battery over USB-C if you have a beefy enough power brick, but you’ll need to use the bundled adaptor and its barrel jack connection to get full performance from the CPU/GPU combo."

Why would one use for music a laptop which is "dramatically loud" according to a journalist who is not even using is for music...?

Interesting. The original review I read of the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 OLED listed the price at a sky high $3,750 for the core i9 model with 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD. But the "Stuff" review shows the price to be $2,300. That's more in line with other Asus laptops and is clearly a much, much better value.

I could maybe be tempted to put up with the heat and noise at that price. But I went ahead and purchased a used M1 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD for $2,500. I just hope the older 10-core M1 Max chip has enough juice to run plenty of demanding plugins.
