I'm trying to use just the de esser part of my dbx286s with my Art Voice Channel. I'm trying to use the preamp, compressor, eq and expander of the Voice Channel, and just eh de esser of the dbx.

I'm having a problem getting things to work though. I don't really understand the difference between the insert plugs, mic ports and line ports and which I'm supposed to connect to which. The manuals of neither really address my particular routing scheme, so... any ideas.

Just put them in series. Mic->Art->DBX, done.

I don't think you don't need to mess with inserts, just can chain them: line out of one device into line in of the other with a standard patch cable is good enough.

Why? Because I don't know at what point the "insert" is of both these. I'd have to look that up in their manuals in order to make a good decision about that.

The difference between mic and line is something like 50 or 60 dB gain. Line level is standardised to be in the ballpark of 1 Volt. Microphones deliver a much much fainter signal of merely some milliVolts which needs to be amplified. That is what a mic preamp does: amplify from mic level to line level.

It looks quite simple to set this up - you just need two 1/4-inch TS cables and an XLR cable for the mic. Plug the microphone into the Art via the XLR input at the far right of the back panel or on the front panel (they should mirror each other). Connect a 1/4-inch TS from the Mic Preamp Output (next to the XLR input on the rear of the unit) to the input of the dbx. Connect another 1/4-inch TS cable from the dbx output to the Insert Input on the rear of the Art (next to the Mic Preamp Output. This will insert the dbx into the Art's mic preamp stage. Now, just disengage the de-esser settings on the Art, disengage everything except the de-esser on the dbx, adjust your signal levels, and Bob's your uncle.

Insert Ports are for sending a signal through an effect and back, mic ports are for microphones, line ports are for line-level inputs.
