None. Almost all of the plugins allow you to choose an installation path during installation. The Steinberg folder is recognized by default because vst = steinberg. However, you can change that.

For VST3 not many plugins give you the option of custom folder, it can be done but I have found that it is way more standardized than VST2

On Win11 I just made 3 folders in the Common Files folder within Program Files. VST, VST2, & VST3 and I send stuff to respective folders, never had a problem.

True, but my VST3 plugins have always been installed to Common files. Never to a Steinberg folder or a random VST folder.rod_zero wrote: Wed Jun 28, 2023 9:25 pm For VST3 not many plugins give you the option of custom folder, it can be done but I have found that it is way more standardized than VST2

Ok, as i thought.
It is a bit annoying having a folder installed without approval. Particularly when it never get used.
It came up when i installed plugin updates. For every update i had to change the install folder from Steinberg vst to Cakewalk vst. I'm fine with vst3 as its folder is needed for every plugin that uses vst3 independent of which daw you use.
The company with the updates also didn't have the energy to put in a check in the code for where the original plugin is installed. I'm not a coder so i wonder if such a check really would need a lot of work to put it in the update code?

AAS used to install vst2 plugins into Steinberg folder. Native Instruments as well.
Btw, I don't get it why some devs install both vst2 and vst3 plugins without asking.

VST was developed by Steinberg in 1996, so yes it is”antique”, but it is defacto standard and now in version 3.
Btw; VST = Steinberg and every dev have to comply with that

As i understand you get the S folder when you do an executive install of a vst2.
If you on other hand never do that but install all the vst2 manually by moving the dll to the daws designated folder, you also never get the S folder.

Been thinking about this for my next rebuild and while I DO still use the Steinberg area for VST2 plugins - I will be moving everything to VST3 for the next build and like Osirus - if necessary will create basic folders in C:\Program Files like VSTPlugins and keep it dead simple.
I also continue to find it fascinating (and annoying) that despite my best efforts to manually intervene in every plugin install I ever do - I still manage to find a few 32 bit plugins out in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VSTPlugins. (Yeah I am looking at you Captain Plugins etc)
At a loss as to who would ever need these or how to even use them. Studio One for example has never supported 32bit plugs from Day 1 and that was over 10 years ago.

And FL Plugin Manager has a selection that says something like Combine 32 bit & 64 bit plugins. I did and it makes things easier because now they show as PLUGIN NAME 32 and 64 bit and put PLUGIN NAME vst3 separately, so it really helped clear out a lot of things off that list. But every computer I've had since computers were a thing has had a Steinberg folder appear after installing things.

I just finished moving to a new laptop, I just dumped all VSTs (all versions) into a single folder, \common files\vst3. The Daw knows which is which. Capability to install to a custom location is something I consider in plugins I buy, although a lower priority.

Can you do that with CLAP as well?napkinthief wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 4:06 pm I just finished moving to a new laptop, I just dumped all VSTs (all versions) into a single folder, \common files\vst3. Sorry, I do not know, I only have VST setup right now, I haven't explored CLAP plugins yet.

I doubt it since CLAP is located (windows) in Common Files, same level as VST3 but you never know….napkinthief wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 5:10 pm Sorry, I do not know, I only have VST setup right now, I haven't explored CLAP plugins yet.
Thanks for answering.
