Slowly but surely transferring my piano techniques to the LinnStrument. Today was all about the diatonic scale's modes and their avoid notes. I familiarized myself with Ionian and played some complex licks I used to do on the piano/keyboard. I also started practicing using two fingers on the right hand for minor/major sixth intervals, like how I used to perform on the piano/keyboard during improvisations, and also expanded the list of Surge XT usable MPE patches/presets so I can know what works and what does not.

I already have decent proficiency with my left hand for common seventh chords, so my next milestone is just relearning the diatonic scale's modes and their avoid notes on the right hand. After that is relearning the jazz and common exotic scales I used for substitutions.

Today I figured out a few tricks for playing some of the other diatonic modes on the LinnStrument with my right hand. Now I currently know:

Ionian
Dorian
Lydian
Aeolian

I have been also working on transitioning between them so that they flow better rhythmically. Once I feel comfortable with my ability I will start testing myself against a metronome.

I also applied the same tricks to play more liberally on my left hand too. It is different because of its shape, so I will need to accomodate it separately when I am ready.

I am slowly filtering my Surge MPE preset/patch list to only use those that offer full MPE, and rejecting partial implementations. Many do not use the Y-axis, and some have no aftertouch.

All diatonic modes have been refamiliarized. I also figured out some compressed chords to use on my left hand, for easier and quicker accompaniment. I tested myself by mostly improvising throughout the latter half of my three-hour session. My progress is good, but my overall performance is still slower compared to my experience with the piano/keyboard. Playing two hands simultaneously is still difficult, since I need to remap both hands physically and cognitively to chord/scale shapes, so once I do that I should be able to cease visual dependence.

The next session is about relearning jazz/common exotic scales. After I have succeeded with that, the next minor goal is simultaneous two-three finger playing on the right hand using all of the mentioned scales, followed by substitutions/modal interchange, then the haptic metronome to tighten my overall performance. Reaching that should bring me much closer to my piano/keyboard skills.

Got both the Rode Podmic USB and the Critter & Guittari microphone to work with Push 3. I have a Tula mic, but was never happy with the sound. Both of these, IMO, sound much better (and are both cheaper than the Tula).

The Podmic can be used via the XLR, or it can be used via the headphone out of the mic, with the mic powered from the usb-a port on Push.

If I do take Push on a trip (which I’m considering soon) then this will be part of the setup to bring with, so I’m excited to see that they work.

The Rode mic actually works best with the iPad, but is still sounds good. I like it better than the Shure SM7B.

Finally swapping out Push 2 for Push 3, so of course that’s the fun part of disconnecting wires that were combined with other wires and cables when they were hidden.

And there’s always the next bright idea of seeing this as an opportunity to tidy up some of the wires that have become messy.

f**k. For such a seemingly simple setup, there are tons of wires.

Upgraded to the official release of Bitwig 5, trying to get used to the new browser which kind of bugs me as it doesn’t remember my filtering options so trying to view plugins by vendor takes loads more clicks than it used to. I think it probably works great for people who want to type stuff, but when I’m working on modular there’s no room for my keyboard near the monitor so I have to rely on the mouse for basic operations.

If you right-click and pick "Browser Settings / Use current selections for this context" it remembers some settings. I have mine only showing "Devices, Plugins" in the "File Kind" area, and sorting by name.

I think the new browser is overly complex and not very intuitive, but I managed to get it working more or less the way I want it to. At this point for me it is a very tiny bit nicer than the previous browser in some ways, but only after working through a lot of frustration with it first. And it wouldn't surprise me if it does more stupid things that annoy me in the future.

Expanded my DIY eurorack with an MS-20 filter module from Noisy Fruits lab and a quad-function generator by Fruku. Also sold my DFAM and Volca Modular, moved things around in the studio and bought the MONA skin for U-he Diva.

I relearned the jazz melodic minor scale, although it was trivial since the scale shape is very similar to Ionian. I also derived an alternative scale shape for it. There are no avoid notes so the same scale shape can be used across all of its seven modes.

One of the major advantages of the tritone layout is its symmetry every two rows. Common exotic scales, such as whole-tone, whole-half, and half-whole are super easy and can be done blind without practice.

I tried skipping ahead to the next goal and found myself stuck with playing 2/3 notes simultaneously on the right hand. It is very difficult and requires a solid framework to navigate, since there are always two different directions to play the same interval. I need to define what intervals I am playing in any given moment while transitioning through a chord progression, so this will be a major hurdle to overcome. Depending on where I place my fingers, polyphonic sliding may become impossible.

Friday night and Saturday morning I figured out some stuff about Spectraphon and emailed Tom Erbe with a bunch of questions and a suggestion.

Then a storm came through Saturday afternoon, knocked out the power, and... we're still waiting. The ETA for restoration got shifted back several times, and currently they're saying Monday at 4PM.

The heat wasn't super terrible downstairs, due to more wind, clouds and rain after the initial storm, but there was no way we were going to be able to sleep upstairs.

I did jam a bit on bass ukulele, with my wife on dulcimer. We tried to play some 70s and 80s rock songs by ear.
