I got so many mixing points in my rack, sends are never a problem. Literally its like 50 or 60 mix points over various modules. Oh and more i guess since i have a large mixer module that i have not even opened.

Sends are really useful in modular for delays and loopers, even if you are only working with a single sound source.vurt wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 5:54 pm i do more insert style.
often sound source/fx/ (x however many)/mixer then a final stereo delay.
i don't do so much different tracks mix style stuff, more just one sound that has everything in it bubbling around.
Most effects give you a wet/dry mix but what I want most of the time is a pre-effect level control, which doesn't impact the dry mix. So for example, I want to send a signal to my delay for a few moments but I want the repeats from the delay to ring through after signal is no longer being sent. With a wet/dry control, signal is still being sent to they effect and when you turn the control towards dry, it's going to cut off the repeats. So instead, I leave the wet/dry to 100% wet all the time and I mix the output of the effect with the original sound, down stream. This way, when I control the input level into the effect, it acts as a send level.
This is one of the topics I'm covering in my videos about feedback patching, as well as creating open feedback loops with modules that don't have them built-in.

for feedback loop patches, theyre a part of the furniture of course, i just meant regular day to day stuff tends to be inserts.
and yeah i like to have a mixer here and there in the chain to drop sounds out for delay to carry on.
but i dont tend to do the drums/bass/lead in the box with different spaces, which was what i took the question to be about

I m still considering simple mixers with stackables but i am somewhat impressed with the Tesseract Modular Tex Mix. They hold a lot of functionality. Controllable VCA's, multiple send channels, and the mono out into the fx aid and stereo back in coming from the fx aid sounded good in my book. They are just 100 euro a pop.justin3am wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 5:43 pm When I want to use FX sends, I often use a matrix mixer or I just use mults and simple mixers. If I mult my sound sources to two separate mixers, one is routed to my FX and the other is the main mix. I usually record effected audio separately but you can also connect the output of an effect to the main mix. Some simple mixers have an unattenuated 'Aux' input, which can be used as a return just for that kind of thing. I use VC crossfaders if I want wet/dry mix, instead of send/return.
This is part of the reason I've never had a large dedicated audio mixer in my rack, but I always have a bunch of simple audio/CV mixers.
A while back I got an Autodub from Steady State Fate, which I like a lot. It makes it easy to have voltage control over a stereo send's level, which can otherwise require a lot of modules.
It would take 20hp in my rack though.

I checked out a few simple mixers from 2hp. Just 2hp but also 100 euro a pop and more limited functionality. But at just 2hp per module, would take quite a bit less space.
Hmmm (strokes his beard although i just kinda shaved
@justin3am : what modules are you using for mixers?

Out of the blue but still related....
I wonder if anyone does a gated reverb in modular here? It's a nice trick.
( A gated reverb is when you duck the reverb when the incoming amplitude is high, and when it lowers the reverb kicks in. That way your sound can pierce through the reverb (it doesn t get all mushy) and when the sound fades out, the reverb/delay gives it a nice tail and ambience.)
Again easy peasy in the DAW but in modular you need to have the modules available.

i do not, but id imagine its possible with erbe verb. it has a cv controlled mix knob.Stefken wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 8:13 pm Out of the blue but still related....

so an envelope follower would be all youd need

There mere mention of gated reverb always gets In The Air Tonight stuck in my headStefken wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 8:13 pm I wonder if anyone does a gated reverb in modular here? It's a nice trick.
I will sometimes duck Mimeophon, or more rarely Beads. It's something I'm more likely to do with plugins generally though.
Putting a VCA inside a feedback loop, ducked by an envelope follower, is a technique I like for sustaining the feedback without clipping it too much.
A channel of Maths (or similar function generator) can work as a simple envelope follower, as long as you have the rise time faster than the fall time. The positive part of the audio makes it go up faster than the negative pulls it down, so it winds up approximating the overall level. The "right" way to do an envelope follower would be to use a full-wave rectifier first and then filter/slew that, but eh.

Disting has an envelope follower and fx aid has a dry/wet mix on cv control, so i could do it. Or maths as a follower.
Your spectraphon also has an envelope follower.

you may need to make it negative? so maths again.
strega also has one. spectraphon has two

I have a few Quadratts, a pair of Moddemix, a Tangle Quartet, an X-pan, a Listen Four from 4ms, a 3xVCA from Happy Nerding, a Submix from Low-Gain, a LVL from SynthFox, a matrix mixer from Elby and of course the good ol' QMMG. I used to use a Mutamix when I was patching drum modules, that one was a lot of fun.
I just kinda build the mixer I need from those, based on what I'm trying to do.

And you weren’t joking… everything sound great running through it.
I don’t have it in the main rack but I wanted to keep using it instead of the ALM HPO. Space constraints choose for me.

yeah, i love both my rosies, the module and my angel
im not sure, if i hadnt bought the cartesian rack, with rosie in, if id have bothered, with only the two inputs its not much of a mixer if thats what you are looking for...
but im so glad i did end up with it, as a crossfader/mini mixer/send return and an output with phones, it probably gets used more than any other single utility module

Rosie's are great, and can be found pretty cheap as well. I use two (both 'B-stock' purchases) in combination with four Doepfer A-138p, split between two A-138o's.
Lots of flexibility.
