Is the midi interface still bollocks for writing notes in?
Was fine in v1, after that they came up with a daft thing where you can't "draw" note length, it defaults to the same length each time, which is weird, and unusable for anything outside of techno.

I just had a look at the promo video and it looks a lot different to the last time I saw it. I think I might make the effort to d/l the demo and have a play, just for shits and giggles.

Yes, I had a quick look at the FL Patcher and the Rack Filter certainly does exactly that - and has been doing it for about two decades, so chances aren't exactly narrow that this is where IL actually got their inspiration from.

It's certainly still quite weird - it adapts the lenght of the following notes automatically according to the first one you draw in. There's a setting that sounds like it would cause that ("auto-update after note-resize" (referring to the length-setting for newly drawn notes)) but regardless whether that's ticked or unticked it does that all the time. I assume that's a bug.metamorphosis wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 4:18 am Is the midi interface still bollocks for writing notes in?

I am glad that I have zero need for this.
Tracktion is certainly still doing some strange things here and there, but it isn't nearly as catastrophic as it once was. I would hope they'll get to it, but then again they seem to be kind of absent these days.
(Apparently they've been inactive for the most part of it for a year or so in their own forum here.)

It seems to respect the setting unless you actually select/delete an existing note, so seems like a bug. I've reported it.jens wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 2:16 pm It's certainly still quite weird - it adapts the lenght of the following notes automatically according to the first one you draw in. Not here - as soon as I resize a note I'm drawing, the next one I draw in gets that same size and the length setting gets updated accordingly - here it never ignores the resizing.
(I'm really not really sure what the auto-update should be good for anyway by the way... normally music consist of an assortment of notes of various durations and if you really - for whatever reason* - more power to you and all - want to create a pattern of notes which have all the same length you could simply set it to that length (if that worked, which it doesn't because auto-update) and be done with it. So that imo would be a bizarre feature to begin with, even if it wasn't broken.
*yeah yeah, an arpeggio, I get it, I get it...

Bitwig does the same thing and it can be really annoying. Especially when the previous note was very long and I want to enter a short note.jens wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 4:01 pm Not here - as soon as I resize a note I'm drawing, the next one I draw in gets that same size and the length setting gets updated accordingly - here it never ignores the resizing.

It's nice to hear they worked hard on improving all sorts of aspects of their DAW.
The note length auto-update thing should just be an option. In Reaper it exists and works as one would expect. Kinda surprised Bitwig doesn't have an option for this.

Yes, they certainly did that - the comping is an absolute dream now (minor niggle of the (strangely enough) missing shortcut for showing/hiding the takes aside) and especially in comparison with Reaper...
I think the note length thing is indeed supposed to be optional in Waveform but a bug prevents it from being switchable...

Agreed - I tried the latest ver last night, was mainly surprised at how snappy and tight it was. While I wish it had some kind of (working) plugin bridge like reaper, on a technology level it's light-years ahead of T7, which has been my mainstay for many years now.jens wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 2:16 pm

In T7, loading an edit is tiresome, it takes forever to build the visual waveforms from the file. In W12, takes a couple of seconds. It still does it -wrong- - the visuals should be cached in the project folder, not a temp folder, and the visuals should be per-file, not per-edit, but it's a significant improvement.

Same as any other DAW, innit? Certainly every one I've tried. Interesting, though, that Techno is the only genre that uses runs or arpeggios or a whole lot of other things that work with a regular beat. Painting note lengths in might be a nice option but I wouldn't want it to be the default. Mebbe SHIFT-Drag or something?metamorphosis wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 4:18 amIs the midi interface still bollocks for writing notes in?

That's how Orion does/did it and it's my preferred method. It's one of the things that made me want to check out the trial. I doubt it's a bug.jens wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 2:16 pmIt's certainly still quite weird - it adapts the lenght of the following notes automatically according to the first one you draw in. I think you must have entirely misunderstood me (even though I wrote it a couple of times here, not just in the post you quoted):
there is a setting that is worded as if it would switch that off, but it has no noticeable (to me) effect.
Why would you doubt that a setting that does nothing is a bug?
TBH I didn't really understand the rest of your post, but then again I'm an audio-guy, so I have not much use for MIDI anyway.

Oh WOW - speaking of audio: I just treid to record additional takes onto a clip and didn't find a way not to hear the previous take - that's insane - I certainly hope that's just a setting I overlook. But almost as worse: it seems it's not possible to access the takes from both recordings together... one has to switch between both recordings.
Edit: actually it createss a whole new clip altogether.
Don't they ever try their software in real-world scenarios?

That just changed Waveform from being the best for audio-recording to the worst...

you may need to edit the title of the thread before long.
