For a great free start, head over to www.hollowsun.com and look for their drum machine samples.

Doru's "Substitutes for a Snare" is quite useful for that too. There's a freebie to download from his site (in fact, many freebies).. and lots of other stuff to check out...

Btw, not exactly a drum library (not at all even), but if one's thinking about electronic drum sounds, one should seriously consider buying DR-008. Apart from being a great drum sampler it's got some excellent synth modules onboard - at very low CPU cost.

Well, it has all the options you'd expect from a drumsampler.rpc9943 wrote:how does dr008 hold up with realistic sounding drums?
And a whole lot more too.
Also, there's some really nice kits (natural sounding, electronic, percussive) to download from FXpansion's site (almost 3GB in total, on a nicely fast server).
At the current price it's a real bargain!
For 100% realistic drums right now (note: right now only!) Battery *might* be a better thing because the mapping editor is highly improved (it's not bad in DR-008 though), but maybe in case you own DR-008 you will also get some discount on the upcoming Drum9, which, should you believe in some rumours (and I do, in that case), will be the "mother of all drumtools".
However, as a combination of a drum sampler AND synthetic drum module, DR-008 is unbeatable allready. There's nothing coming close.

interestingly enough, a while ago i bought the m-audio prosessions "elektron:machinedrum" sample library. pretty good stuff as far as electronic sounds go, especially for $40 or whatever. definitely worth looking into.

I have the Best Service "Dance Mega Drums 2" and "Dance Mega Drum Kits". "Kits" is just a collection of small sampled hits that were recycled from Best Service's extensive collection of sample CD's. If that's not what you're after, don't buy the CD. The hits are not arranged in any particular order and almost all of the supposed 5000 drum samples are cut off a little too short (as is what usually happens when one uses Recycle to extract Individual drums hits from a loop).
Dance Mega Drums 2 is a little more usable. It just contains a few hundred samples arranged into categories like "Bass Drum" "Snare" "Hats" Clap" etc.. Kits also often sounds a little lo-fi but its good for certain types of hip hop beats. There really aren't any good distorted 909 "fat-as-hell" bass drums in this collection (unlike many others). I often find that I have to combine samples to get something that sounds half decent most of the time. However, I would recommend "Dance Mega Drums 2" over kits.

Reviews about SuperPercussionsFX vol.1-4
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 1 : A number of very useful hits, strikes, and tweaks whose most obvious use may be for calling up an industrial atmosphere. However, they are not at all limited to that... there are a number of very organic and warm, yet metallic, sounds in this collection. In any case the use is determined by the composer... here we have simply a broad range of sounds that recall silverish and grayish, lusterous and rusty .
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 2 : More computer heavy noises here... if you are looking for something that is unmistakably "digital", or of the computer, this is where I would go first. A lot of interesting percussive sounds which can completely be used to make a complete track, whether for dancing, rocking, or just moving along the tune... yet nobody can confuse these sounds with trying to "mimic" more traditional percussion, nor is that their point. Try them... you will see what I mean. The mix of subtle tones and extreme effects can provide a pretty much endless variety of rhythms .
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 3 : The sounds in this volume tend to be longer, and could stand a bit more "on their own" than those in the other volumes. They could still be used with taste in loops and rhythms, of course. When I hear them I think of movie music... a lot of the sounds here are very good for a limited number of places in a tune. How you use them is of course your decision! The good thing is there are SO MANY and such a variety that making a decision, not searching for sounds, may be the music producer's biggest headache.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 4 : Where to begin? Tons of fun stuff here. Weird effects from another planet, simple and small hits, low and high, short and long. This is where you would go to continuously look to color your music... you will probably find that sound you were looking for here and also something you may not have thought of which can take you in a new direction. I have no idea where Doru got a lot of these audio delights, if they were carefully constructed , sampled, or sampled and then broken apart in a crazy way, or whatever... but having them saves me a lot of work , for sure, and is a great beginning for exploration and brainstorming.

I have been meaning to get back to you with a review of your 4super fx cds , but getting to listen to all the samples has taken a long time. i wanted to give you a proper review after hearing every sample on the 4 cds !!!! . As you know there are 1000s and 1000s of them!!!
well here it is....
After buying SuperDrums 8000 and downloading almost all the refills from Doru's site, i could not go past getting my hands on the 4 new SuperPercussionsFx cds . The quality is great and i could only imagine how much time and effort has gone into making them. There is such a variety i will never need to look anywhere else for crazy effects to add to my tracks. Used as a replacement for percussion or drums these effects can have an awsome effect. Apart from that these sounds can be used in almost any musical composition which needs trippy, spacey, techy, futuristic or industrial type psychedelic bits and peices sprinkled over, under or through your tracks.
I am in Melbourne, Australia and i received the cds after only a few days.....which is pretty good since it came from the otherside of the earth !
Many thanks to Doru !
ok. here goes.
SuperPercussionFX-vol.1 - ('metals') : is great. if you ever wanted some raw and original sounds to replace and/or enhance those rythm parts of your tracks look no further !!! There is something in here for every occasion !! Why use a traditional sound when you can use a new fresh interesting sound ?? I particulary like the short metals, which i am starting to use as replacement hihats and to add dynamics to snare drums. The reverbed metals are great used along side cymbals and crashes and adds character to tracks. But this is just how i am using them, these samples are so versatile you can use them almost anywhere in your compositions to add that little extra 'sparkle'
SuperPercussionFx -vol. 2 : Since i recieved the SuperPercussionFX-vol.2 cd , i have been going back over my tracks and giving them a facelift by sprinkling these samples all over them. The great thing is....these samples are so diverse and usable you can use them anywhere to add another dimension to tracks already made, or simply be inspired to enter new songwriting territory. There is a Kick drum for every 'other' occassion!!! These samples are pretty much high energy sounds so load them into your dance/trance/psy/breaks tracks and prepare for lift-off.
SuperPercussionFx -vol. 3 : another great cd by Doru...Full of huge sounding hits, echoes and interesting atmospheric fx these samples are great for that particular part of a track that needs something LARGE and atmospheric. These samples are great used as is....no need to fine tune those reverb and fx units...just load in the sample and she is ready to go. But if you love playing around with your fx add some more and see what happens!!!!
SuperPercussionFx -vol. 4 : is one samples cd that has almost every Fx percussion you could ever want. From small to large hits, high and low blips to light and heavy electronics this refill is jam packed.....9520(!) one-shots samples and all high quality of course! I can only imagine how much time and effort went into this cd ....Just another great product from this dedicated sonic Guru. THANK YOU!!!!

SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 1 : Wow ! Some nice replacements here for the old usual sounds we have grown used to . Give all your old material a new lease of life by just using some of these sounds in place of the old kit ,inspiration in a can !!! Theres something for every track on here with over 9500 samples to choose from its not hard to just grab and play . Im gonna have some fun i think .
Again another winner from DORU !
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 2 : Glitch makers and noise fans will love this collection , a veritable feast of computer and digital sounds . I dont know where you find the time to find all these sounds , and why you dont go completely mad sorting them . Im going mad here trying to narrow it down out of the thousands available , and it aint easy cos theyre all so good . Not for your average percussion seeker but check out the sounds im sure you 'll be hooked. Didnt take me long to make my decision .
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 3 : Atmosphere free inside it should say on the cover ! Loads of useful fx that could help enhance most peoples tracks , especially mine great for soundscapes and soundtracks but also plenty of big hits and when i say plenty if you know DORU's work , you 'll know he doesnt mess about. All four discs are packed full of useful sounds/hits .
And same as my superdrums 8000 delivered damn quick too !
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 4 : The sounds on here are so far up my street theyre movin in with me from messed up human(ish) sounds to radio interference and all the other essential noises as always proffessionally pacakged and easily laid out on the discs . Only real problem is there is so much to get through , im not sure ill ever have time to make music again saying that as i always do with new sample discs , i grabbed a few random bits and came up with this , due to some of the samples being multi pitched this made it possible to create some nice melodys as well as percussion. As i said earlier proffessionally done , so no annoying silences here and there just load em up and use em !

SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 1 : Is a great assortment of metal sounds. I like how all the different types of metal sounds are seperated into there own folders (very organized). All the sounds, in my opinion, are very high defintion. The sound quality is great. Some of the metals have a very hard texture to them as well as a warm texture. They all have that analog warmth to them. Great cd for building any type of track u wish to make.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 2 : These sounds are great for building tracks. The diversity is superb and allows you to spice up almost any track (genre) u desire. I especially like the kicks and snares folders. The kicks and snares are very different from what i have ever heard before. The kicks are punchy and crisp. Kicks and snares are very important to me, so i hold these two folders very high within my collection. Sound quality is perfect. Two thumbs up.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 3 : Another great CD from the man himself, Doru. This volume is a great collection of echo, cosmic and power hits. Yet again, the diversity is there. There is a little somthing for every track on this cd. Quality is great. If u love reverb, u will love this cd. You wont be bother by trying to put the right amount of reverb on your hit; the reverb is already there. VERY CONVENIANT if u ask me.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 4 : Contains every percussion fx you wil ever need. A producers dream. Sound quality is great. There are 9520 one shots on this cd. I can only imagine how much time it took to make these sounds and then organize them !!! Wow, ver impressive; very professional. Another two thumbs up.

SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 1 : I like super percussionsfx1 a lot. I really like the industrial feel that they have. Some of the longer drums have a good feel as far as the fx. Also even the smaller drum sounds have a very distinctive sound to them as far as industrial and I think anyone would be a fool to not use them. Some of these drums sounds have a somewhat darker feel to them which is what I personally look for in a good drum refill.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 2 : Number 2 is much different than the first one. The sounds have a lot of differences. The drums here would be good for most genres of electronic music. And some of the fx's are very nice as well. A personal can also easily make nice techno tracks with the hits and kicks along with the sound fx's. Another person who may wanna consider to use this in a fast past track cause most of the sounds here have a nice feel to along with some of the longer drum sounds.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 3 : This one I really like a lot. The reverbed series is by far one of my favorites. These sounds have soo many uses it's not even funny. Just messing with them with some of my tracks just adds a whole other demension. What I really like about these samples is that they're longer than most. Also just the sounds which are nice would be great in a lot of electronic and maybe even some classical. Most of these sounds have a nice sense of suspense and something that I look for in a good sample a dak feelin. I think is someone was lookin for good dark samples or something that might be used in a movie score this would be for them.
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 4 : Ahh number for. This one has a little something for everyone. This is a total fx's sample pack and definitly worth it's weight in gold. Many of the sounds here could have soo many uses it'd be impossible to mention here. I mean they'd be great in electronic music to but in a place that you need strange sounds or experimental music. Also a lot of this could be used in ambient electronic mostly because some of these sounds are lower and not so punchy. Some of these sounds would kind of put your mind into a creative spell at least for me anyways, because listening to some of them a lot of them would work in drum kits.
So in conclusion every last one of these sample CD's are worth there weight in gold. And if any one was ever lookin for good samples to check out I'd definitly send them here.

SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 2 : it highly qualitative samples which you can use in the track. If you create a trance psy-trance or rigid breake then these samples the best in the image will approach for you. In them that energy to which you would be felt aspired !
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 3 : they are specially created for progressive dance. As they can be used on any track if you want to receive volume in the record !
SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 4 : huge quantity different it is hit from are short up to long, volumetric and what only still you want. They will help your composition to become independent !

SuperPercussionsFX - vol. 1 : I purchased Doru Malia’s Super PercussionsFX vol. 1 recently , and after a couple of days of going through the cd I can say I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. The library of metallic sounds and the variation on those sounds makes this cd very flexible to use no matter what style of music you may be producing . The samples are well crafted and with virtually no annoying noise or artifacts to ruin your creative flow . I received my copy in the mail within 9 days (Romania -> US), was very pleased with that, and the price included shipping! Mr. Malaia runs a very tight professional sampling business and we’ll be looking forward to many more sound libraries to come.
